Stress can be extremely stressful, for the person suffering from it as well as the people living and dealing with him. Stress can harm the body and mind of a person and can lead to a chain of diseases and disorder related to the heart, mind and body. Stress is one of the most dangerous causes for diseases like diabetes, ulcers of the stomach and headaches.

The chain of symptoms that can be triggered when you are in a stressful situation make us spring up and take notice! Stress makes the heart pump blood harder and the due to the increase in blood pressure, the muscles and nerves become tense, adrenaline is released into the body, glucose production increases, pupils dilate, digestion becomes lax, brain is extremely confused as you sweat profusely! These symptoms all happen in a matter of seconds and you could be in line for an impending heart attack.

A melee of factors that are internal as well as external can lead to stress. Some of the internal factors that can cause stress are feelings of jealousy, hatred, fear, envy etc. External factors are a dime a dozen like radiation, toxic substances, high voltage lights, noises, drugs etc. to mention a few. If you are a person who is constantly stressed out, it is important to seek treatment. Stress can also be treated at home with natural remedies.  Natural remedies help in keeping the tension low and the heart healthy and slow! Though most herbal remedies are safe to consume, it is still advisable to consul a herbalist before using them.

Herbal Remedies for Stress

1. Holy Basil For Treating Stress

Holy basil is an anti stress agent and can be used for treating and controlling stress related problems. Holy basil can be planted at home and hence a very easy remedy to keep away from stress as well. When you are in stress, chew 10-12 leaves of holy basil two times a day and allow the juices to calm your nerves and release the tension that is stretching you to the limit. Chewing holy basil every day will help you keep away from stress effectively.

2. Sage For Treating Stress

Sage leaves too have been known to relieve stress considerably. A tea made from sage leaves can be given to patients suffering from stress. For preparing the tea, take one teaspoon of sage leaves that are dried and boil it with a cup of water. Cover the water and let it steep for 10 minutes. Drain the tea and drink it for great relief from symptoms. You can use honey for sweetening it.

Fresh sage leaves too can be used for preparation of tea. For fresh leaves, crush the leaves so that the juices mix well with the cup of water while boiling. Add honey for sweetening purposes and consume it 2-3 times a day.

3. Chamomile For Removing Stress

The herb chamomile has been used for centuries to treat stress and calm the nerves. Chamomile tea can be prepared by taking a tablespoon of chamomile and adding it to boiling water. Steep for ten minutes and drink it for instant relief from nerves that are frayed. Chamomile tea can be taken 2-3 times a day depending upon the level of stress you are experiencing.

4. Lemon Balm For Curing Stress

Lemon Balm too can exert a lot of healing effect on a person who is stressed out. Use lemon balm for calming the nerves and relaxing the muscles. Lemon balm can also be used as a precaution against over stress. It can be taken as tea or tinctures and helps in relieving pain as it has mild sedative qualities.

5. St John’s Wort For Treating Stress

One of the most popular herbal remedies for treating stress, St John’s Wort is available in liquid form as well as pill.  This herb is used for enhancing your mood and is known to have very few side effects as well. Taking this twice a day will help deal with anxiety related disorders and stress.

6. Peppermint Tea For Treating Stress

All a stressed out individual requires is a few minutes of relaxation in a calm environment with a cup of tea in hand. Take off your regular tea from the schedule and replace it with peppermint tea instead. Peppermint tea relieves you from all the anxieties and leaves you calm and composed after a few minutes. If stress has caused indigestion as well, peppermint can very well take care of that too.

7. Nutrients For Removing Stress

Vitamins like B and A and other minerals like potassium, magnesium and calcium can help in relieving the symptoms of stress like anxiety and irritability. You can take supplements and include green and yellow leafy vegetables for getting adequate amounts of vitamin A.

Vitamin B can be found in bananas, green leafy vegetables, nuts, sprouts etc. Potassium too plays a great role in controlling insomnia, breathlessness and fatigue. Whole grains and nuts can be consumed for dealing with potassium deficiencies. Magnesium helps in preventing heart attacks and can be got from dates, bananas, prunes, seeds etc.

8. Echinacea For Preventing Stress

Stress can cause great changes in your immune system. Immunity of a stressful person is greatly compromised and he is susceptible to many diseases at this stage. Therefore it is important to strengthen the immunity when you are under stress. Echinacea is known for boosting the immune system and can be used to prevent the ill effects of stress on the body.

9. Valerian For Relieving Stress

Valerian can help you sleep like a baby as it can reduce anxiety and prevent panic attacks. This mild sedative exerts a calming effect on your central nervous system and helps in relieving the taut nerves from extreme stress.

10. Potent Herbal Tea For Removing Stress

Here’s a potent tea that you can try for removing stress. Take one ounce each of lavender, marshmallow root, passion flower, lemon balm, rosemary and kava kava. Mix all these ingredients well.  Take one tablespoon of this mixture and add to a cup of boiling water. Allow it to steep for 15 minutes. Drain the contents and enjoy the tea.
