Eggplant or aubergine is commonly known as brinjal in India. The scientific name of eggplant is Solanum Melongena.It is available in a variety of shape, sizes and colors and consumed usually in the cooked form. Eggplant is actually a fruit and grows on the creepers. It is not only a tasty veggie, it also has several health benefits some of which are listed below.
Eggplants have fiber, antioxidants, flavanoids, potassium and vitamin B6 all of which keep the arteries healthy. It also prevents fluid retention and thus reduces the risk of heart attack and other heart related diseases.
Iron is important for the body. But excess of anything is always bad. Eggplant has a compound called nasunin which helps remove excess iron from the body.If you have less iron then it is better to avoid eating eggplant.
The fibers present in eggplant help remove the toxic substances from the colon thereby reducing the risk of colon cancer. Eggplant also has several antioxidants which bring down the risk of cancer.

It is believed that eggplant can help overcome smoking habit. This is because it contains nicotine which helps quit tobacco. However in order to quit smoking one would have to eat very large quantities of eggplant.
Eggplant contains several antioxidants which prevent the premature ageing of skin. They help prevent wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Eggplants keep the skin young and glowing.
Eggplants contain potassium which maintains the electrolyte balance and helps control blood pressure. Eggplants also contain anthocyanin which also helps control blood pressure.
The cholorogenic acid present in eggplant bestows upon it antimicrobial and antiviral properties which help the body fight infection better.
Eggplant contains bioflavanoids which give relief from stress and have a cooling effect on the mind. Thus they act as stress busters.
Eggplant is also known to increase appetite. mixture of brinjal, tomato ,salt and pepper not only induces appetite but also helps in proper digestion of food.
Eggplant strengthens the hair follicles and promotes hair growth. It also keeps scalp infections at bay. It is particularly useful for dry dull hair as it makes the hair soft, smooth and shining.
B complex vitamins which are received from external sources are very much essential for the body. They are very useful in improving the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Eggplant contains several of these vitamins for example vitamin B5, B6, B1 and B3.
