In a study that was conducted among individuals with varied dietary habits, cholesterol levels of people who consumed almonds and the people who did not consume almonds were measured. It was observed that there was a 10% reduction in the LDL cholesterol (or bad cholesterol) levels of the people who consumed almonds regularly than the people who did not include almonds in their diet. This is due to the fact that almonds contain monounsaturated fats and antioxidants that help in the prevention of radical damage.
Almonds are rich in Vitamin E and magnesium. The magnesium present in almonds when enters the blood stream, does an impeccable job of regulating blood flow and improves the circulation of blood throughout the body. Better blood circulation means lower chances of clogging of arteries that is usually caused due to high levels of cholesterol in the blood.
Almonds do a superb job of not only lowering the cholesterol levels, but also of preventing oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which is a crucial step in the process that leads up to heart-related diseases. This is because of the presence of polyphenol antioxidants in the skin of almonds which prevents oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
Almonds are unique in many ways, but one quality which makes them stand out from many other foods is that they have a high content of monounsaturated fats. These are the same monounsaturated and health-promoting fats which are found in olive oil. Results from the Nurses Health Study suggest that if a person replaces carbohydrate-diet with an equivalent amount of nuts, then the person is at a 30% lower risk of having heart-related disorders.
