Small red raised areas on the edges of the eyelids are known as stye. They are a kind of infection. You can have infection of the sebaceous glands or apocrine glands. Depending on the gland affected you can have an external or an internal stye.
Though stye is generally painful in nature an internal stye is more uncomfortable than an external one. It contains pus, water and bacteria. Do not rupture the stye as it will spill out the pus and along with it the bacteria which will spread the infection. Though such eruptions start abruptly, they generally do not last long.
The maximum duration is 10 days. Such infections are generally brought while rubbing eyes with dirty hands. You can use medicines, but stye can be very well controlled at home. There are home remedies for stye. Let us look at some of these.
Home Remedies For Stye
1. Salt Water Rinse
A slat water rinse can be quite effective against stye. Salt is analgesic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory in nature. This can be quite effectively used to treat stye. Prepare a salt water solution by adding some salt to at least two tablespoons of water. This will make a warm salt solution. Now rinse the stye with this solution, but take care not to touch the pupils.
2. Colloidal Silver
It has been seen that colloidal silver can cure stye quite effectively. The peculiarity of colloidal silver is that the silver colloids in it have the property of attaching themselves to the bacteria or virus. This can deactivate the bacteria. So go and fetch some colloidal silver from the local pharmacy store. Now just rinse the upper or lower eyelid where the stye has formed. With repeated application you will be cured of stye.
3. Turmeric
Turmeric is antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in nature. It has the ability to reduce swelling and irritation. You can make an eye drop with turmeric. For this boil two cups of water with a pinch of turmeric. Continue to boil until only one cup is left. Now let it cool and then strain. There should be no turmeric suspension in the liquid. Now wash the eye with this.

4. Hygiene
The primary causative agent behind the infections are your hands. Since the precipitating factor behind this infection is unhygienic hands you should have clean hands as a primary mode of treatment. For this wash your hands with soap and warm water. You can also use a hand sanitizer. Moreover, avoid touching your eyes with hands.
5. Warm Compress
A warm compress is able to treat the infection and provide some comfort from the discomfort and pain. What happens is heat has the ability to increase blood circulation. This increase the number of white blood cells coming in contact with the infection. This in turn fights and defeats the infection.
For deriving the benefit of warm compress soak a piece of clean cloth in hot water, rinse the water and place it on the affected eye lid for at least 5 minutes. Take care to see that the heat doe not burn the skin of the eyelid. Do this four to five times a day. You will feel relieved.
