Head congestion is a very uncomfortable condition which occurs due to swollen nasal passages, clogging in ear, sinus infection and allergies. These conditions arise due to viral infections. It is thus usually witnessed when there is excessive inflammation and phlegm in the air passages.

Drinking Water In Excess
Blockages in nasal passage is an important cause of head congestion. Mucus thickening often leads to blockages in the nasal passage. Drinking water in abundance ensures the wetness and moistening of the passage as dry passages lead to resistance in fluid flow which causes mucus accumulation in thick layers.
Drink 2 to 3 times more water than you usually drink. It will ensure that blockages due to mucus thickening don’t become the cause of head congestion.
Steaming Herbal Teas
Herbal teas always lend relaxation from congestions be it head congestion or nasal congestion. Peppermint, Eucalyptus and chamomile are some herbs you may use to make tea with. Use honey in the tea as it enhances these herbs’ effects. The tea you drink must be steaming because it gives warmth to your nasal passage and helps in decongestion.
Take sips of the tea and do not gulp it down. If tea is not an option for you, soak a cotton ball in eucalyptus or peppermint oil and sniff it but make sure that the oil doesn’t go inside your nose.
Saline Solution
Add a tablespoon of salt in a cup of water and heat it. Allow it to step down to become warm then apply it in your nostrils or put a drop inside with the help of cotton soaked in it.
It loosens up the mucus and flushes the excess mucus out which gives you an instant relaxation from congestion and a light head. You can add a pinch of baking soda in the solution for best results.
Acupressure And Sleeping Posture
Place two fingers on either side right below the cheek bones and push it upwards such that all weight of your head comes on the thumb and the head feels relaxed. Do this for one minute and then repeat it after an interval.
Try to sleep straight and use more than one pillow to keep your head up and nasal tract in an inclined posture. This prevents stabilization of mucus and allows it to keep moving.
Humidifier
Before going to bed, you can run a humidifier to have a sound and congestion free sleep. It helps you in easy breathing as the air soothes your nasal tract rendering you decongested all the night. If this is not a feasible option, they you may try the humidifier effect in the bathroom.
Close the door, run the shower and stand in the bathroom for fifteen minutes. Within 15 minutes, with the door closed, the air around you becomes humid which help you in reducing congestion. You should do it at least 3 times in a day.
