Kennel cough is a condition from which dogs suffer. Though this condition has multiple causes, it is mainly caused by the Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria. Therefore it is also known as Bordetella. When dogs become infected with this bacteria, they also become infected with a virus simultaneously which is responsible for several canine diseases.
When dogs inhale bacteria or virus into their respiratory tract they catch kennel cough. The respiratory tract in dogs is lined with a coating of mucous which traps the foreign microbes but a number of factors weaken this protective lining and results in infection. The larynx and the wind pipe become inflamed, which is why dogs make a choking sound or a hacking noise when they cough persistently.
Some dogs have a runny nose, eye discharge and sneezing. Dogs can also catch kennel cough due to cold temperatures, crowded or poorly ventilated conditions and exposure to cigarette smoke.
