Therefore, we can safely award our eyes, the prestigious title of “master sense organ”. However, in the present times, eyesight problems owing to increased exposure to harmful rays from electronic screens, diabetes, cataract, glaucoma, sun rays and other reasons are alarmingly on the rise. Eye problems can be corrected with dietary and exercise remedies.
One of the basic requirements is to keep your body well-hydrated as dehydration will result in eye dryness, which will cause a number of eye problems. Practicing yoga eye exercises can also help prevent the development of eye complications in people who run the potential risk of developing them.
The yoga eye exercises are very simple. Start with sitting cross-legged on the floor and your face calm and your eyes gazing forward. Now blink your eyes as much as you can for some time. You can also close your eyes while blinking and shut them as tightly as you can, till they are wrinkled. Remain in this pose for about 10 seconds. This pose relaxes the eyes as well as the muscles of your forehead. Gently release the eyes. Repeat as often as you can.
Eye Rotation exercise is a simple yoga exercise that tends to relax your eyes. This exercise is performed by rotating your eye ball from top to bottom and sideways. Begin by pointing your gaze to your right, then point your gaze upwards, followed by pointing your gaze leftwards and then downwards. Rotate your eyes in both the clockwise and counter-clockwise directions for 5-10 times.
Close them and remain that way for a few minutes. The movement caused by this exercise will tone up the muscles of your eyes. This exercise will also improve blood circulation in your eyes. This can be done even while working on the computer or watching television, as it is very easy to perform and does not need any preparation. Your head should not move with your eyes while performing this exercise.
The thumb gazing yoga exercise is recommended for improving eye focus. Sit cross-legged on the floor. Open out your arm straight in front of you and in level with your eyes. Make a “thumbs up” sign and hold your thumb in straight line with your eyes, parallel to the ground.
Now, slowly move your thumb to your right side and follow the movement without blinking. Keep moving the thumb till your hand is perpendicular to your body in a sideways position. Return the thumb to the starting point following it with your gaze. Repeat the exercise with the left thumb. Your head should not move with your eyes while performing this exercise.
Sit with your head straight and facing forwards. Move your gaze to ceiling without moving your head. Fix your eyes on the ceiling without moving your head. Remain in this pose for 10 seconds. Slowly return your gaze to the starting position. This exercise will relax your eye muscles by providing them an upward and downward movement. It will also help in improving blood circulation in the eye.
Palming is one of the time-tested yoga activities for eye relaxation. Rub your palms to generate heat and gently cup your eyes with these.
The warmth of your hands will relax your optic nerve. This, along with the dimness caused by your palms that block direct light from falling on your eyes, will relax your eyes completely.
