Flu or influenza is viral infection of the respiratory tract and is extremely contagious. The common cold and flu have common symptoms and are both viral infections but the flu is very exacerbating and it confines you to bed very ill and indisposed. Every one suffers from this ailment at some point in their lives.
The virus spreads through secretions of the nose and throat and when you breathe in the infected air, you inhale the virus along with it. It is also spread by using the infected person’s contaminated items. If one member in the house gets infected, the whole household is liable to be prostrated with flu.
High fever, severe congestion, chest pains, violent headaches and body pains, persistent coughing and sore throat are some of the unpleasant results of this infection. The weakness that you experience after having had flu takes months to abate. If the flu worsens and complications set in, it can turn into pneumonia.
If you want quick relief, you should use eucalyptus oil. This oil has antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and analgesic properties. It relieves nasal and chest congestions by the expulsion of phlegm, stops a runny nose, diminishes headaches and alleviates muscle pains.
Heat a folded cloth on a griddle. When quite hot put a few drops of eucalyptus oil onto it and inhale the hot vapors deeply. Keep inhaling till the cloth loses its heat. Do this, three times a day.
Garlic has a wide range of curative properties used in treating everything from common flu to more serious diseases like cancer and heart dysfunctions. Its sulphur containing components are very efficacious in dealing with all sorts of infections and inflammations.
It is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic and can make short work of the distressing symptoms of flu. Take a clove of garlic in your mouth and gently crush it with your teeth. Inhale the strong fumes thus released into your throat and lungs. Inhale as long as you can then chew the clove and swallow.
Ginger contains a number of antiviral compounds which reduce pain and fever. Its main compound called gingerol is a natural cough suppressant and clears congestion from the lungs.
Tulsi stops a runny nose, energizes the body and promotes a sense of well being. Boil two cups of water. Add freshly crushed ginger and ten tulsi leaves to it. Boil until only one cup of water remains. Strain the tea and drink it hot. Drink three cups daily.
Mustard plaster applied to the chest relieves congestion and stimulates blood circulation. Grind four tablespoons of mustard seeds with a little water to form a thick paste.
Apply it on the chest and cover the chest with a warm cloth. The strong and pungent aroma of the mustard helps to clear nasal congestion and the heat from the mustard relieves pain and congestion.
Plain steam does a lot in clearing nasal and chest congestions and in bringing the much wanted relief. Inhale the hot steam from a bowl of boiling water several times a day. Cover your head with a large towel when inhaling so that the steam is unable to escape. You will breathe easier and your headache will simply vanish.
