Bronchitis is caused by a virus which inflames the lining of the bronchial tubes. The bronchial tubes connect the windpipe to the lungs. Acute bronchitis often occurs when the cold or flue gets out of hand.
It reduces the flow of oxygen into the lungs, causing thick mucous to form in the tubes followed by chest pains, persistent coughing with green colored phlegm, shortness of breath and fever.
The throat becomes sore and painful. It is often accompanied by a wheezing and hoarseness and a grating in the lungs. It can also be caused by long exposure to dust, smoke and polluted and unhealthy air.
Acute bronchitis does not last long but if it persists for a long time, it can turn chronic. The respiratory tract can also become prone to complications like pneumonia or asthma. Viral infections are best treated with natural cures rather than antibiotics which do not uproot the root cause.
Turmeric is very common and popular in treating a number of ailments. Turmeric accelerates healing and has a special potency to reduce phlegm. Its main component curcumin is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antiviral. Heat half teaspoon of pure ghee till it is quite hot.
Turn off the flame and add one teaspoon of turmeric powder and roast it in the hot ghee. Form a ball and swallow it with a glass of hot milk before going to bed. Do not eat anything or drink water after taking this medicine. Take this every night until absolutely free from cough. The ghee will soothe the lining of the bronchial tubes and dislodge the mucous from it. Turmeric will reduce the swelling and infection.
Pepper is loaded with health giving properties. The polyphenolic anti-oxidants such as cryptoxanthin and lycopene free the body of harmful radicals and protect against disease. It abounds in iron which ameliorates the health of the respiratory system. Heat half teaspoon of pure ghee until hot.
Lower the flame, add seven to eight peppercorns and flip them till they swell and sputter. Mix well, one teaspoon of mishri or lump sugar powder. Eat it hot, crunching the peppercorns slowly. Take this before bedtime and do not drink water on it. The ghee will relieve the irritability in the lungs and the pepper will mitigate the wheezing and make the hoarseness vanish.
Eucalyptus oil is full of healing properties such as antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Its essential oils decongest the bronchial tubes, ease sore throat and stop a runny nose.
