5 Vitamins That Fight Inflammation

Share

Inflammation is a sign of the immune system fighting against microorganisms that had attacked the body. Although inflammation is considered healthy when it occurs following an injury, unwanted inflammation is harmful for the health. Unwanted inflammation triggered by overproduction of pro-inflammatory substances is linked to heart disorders, diabetes and inflammatory disorders such as arthritis and psoriasis. Certain vitamins that have anti-inflammatory property can help in taming inflammation. To fight inflammation, add foods rich in the following vitamins to your diet.

Below Are The 5 Vitamins That Fight Inflammation:

1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is known to help in fighting inflammation. It helps in inhibiting unwanted production of pro-inflammatory substances.[1] According to studies, boosting the vitamin C level in the blood causes significant reduction in the signs of inflammation. Furthermore, low levels of vitamin C increases inflammation in people suffering from arterial diseases that is responsible for worsening heart diseases. Studies have also shown that vitamin C helps in reducing inflammation and pain in the muscles and joints after exercises.

2. Niacin

Niacin or vitamin B3 is known for its anti-inflammatory property.[2] It is known to help in inhibiting production of pro-inflammatory substances such as high-sensitivity C reactive protein that is associated with inflammatory disorders such as arthritis.

3. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is known to help in fighting chronic inflammation. It helps in regulating the function of the genes that trigger production of pro-inflammatory substances that are associated with low grade inflammation that causes heart diseases, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.[3] Moreover, it also helps in activating the genes responsible for stimulating production of substances that help in reducing inflammation.

4. Vitamin K

To fight inflammation, add foods rich in vitamin K such as dark green leafy vegetables to your diet. Studies have revealed that low level of vitamin K increases production of inflammatory substances in the body.[4] Vitamin K seems to help in obstructing expression of genes associated with production of inflammatory cytokines. Hence, vitamin K is beneficial for people suffering from chronic inflammation.

5. Vitamin E

Vitamin E plays an important role in reducing inflammation. The antioxidant property of vitamin E helps in neutralizing free radicals that may induce inflammation.[5] Furthermore, vitamin E helps in suppressing production of the inflammation causing C-reactive protein. High level of C-reactive protein leads to low grade inflammation, which increases risk of chronic diseases.
