6 Effective Herbal Remedies For Chronic Cough

Chronic or persistent cough can be very annoying. It can disturb you in every step of your daily activities.  You may also be coughing at night which not only disturbs your own sleep, but also that of your family.

Coughing is your body’s natural response to clear the throat from mucus or other secretions or irritants. You can have dry cough where there is no mucus. You can also have productive cough that produces mucus on coughing. Though both are indicative of some disorder, a dry cough is all the more potent and may signify some underlying medical condition.

If you are suffering from chronic cough you should check up with a doctor to determine the etiology of the disease. If the reason behind the chronic cough comes out to be some not so serious one you can get it treated at home. There are a handful of herbal remedies for chronic cough. Let us explore some of these.

Herbal Remedies For Chronic Cough

Licorice

Licorice is an expectorant, and can provide soothing relief to the mucus membrane. For this reason it has been found to be quite effective in treating chronic cough due to accumulation of mucus. You can slice up a licorice root and steep it in boiling water for at least 10 minutes.

Strain the solution and mix it with one teaspoon of honey. If you take it regularly you will be benefited a lot. The anti-inflammatory and soothing nature of honey will also add to the potency of the licorice root.

Ginger

Ginger contains anti-inflammatory compounds. It can sooth the lining of the throat and provide some relief from the constant irritation there.

Moreover, ginger is antibacterial and antiviral in nature and supports the immune system. You can prepare garlic tea by finely chopping a piece of garlic and boiling it in water for a maximum of 5 minutes. Strain the solution and take it sip by sip. You will get a soothing feeling in the throat. This will reduce the spasms of coughing.

Horehound

This will be of good use if your cough is not due to accumulation of mucus. This herb has a cough suppressing property. It is also soothing for the mucus lining and can relieve pain. It can be taken along with honey or as tea.

Sage

This herb is also a very good cough suppressant. It can also fight bacterial infections and soothe the throat. Sage can be taken with honey or as tea regularly to get relief from frequent spasmodic cough.

Thyme

This herb has a suppressive effect on cough. It has been seen that thyme can help the throat muscles to relax and prevent frequent spasms.

This results in reducing the spasms of the muscles. As a result of this you will get relief from the chronic cough. Moreover thyme also has antibacterial property. You can have thyme tea.

Wild Cherry Bark

This herb is an ingredient in commercial cough syrups. The bark has pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. It can sooth the agitated muscles of throat and open up the congested bronchial network.
