Lumbago is a term which is sometimes used for lower back pain. It can be caused by various mechanisms like muscle imbalance, poor posture, and any underlying pathology like tumors or nerve compression. Lumbago is very common in the old aged people, and occurs mostly because of degeneration of spine in such cases. People suffering from lumbago have various symptoms including mild to severe lower back pain. Sometimes, there is also painful and intense muscle contractions which hamper movement.

Capsaicin

It is a chemical found in chili, and is thought to possess pain relieving properties because research has shown that it slowly eliminates substance P, a chemical that is found in our body that transmits pain. Thus, essentially it blocks the pain impulses from your back in reaching your brain, so that no pain is felt. To utilize this effect, any ayurvedic solution with capsaicin as an active content can be used. You should also take chilly in your daily diet.

Vinegar

Vinegar is formed after multiple fermentations that make it have rich contents of amino acids and many vitamins and enzymes. One of the theories of lumbago is that it could be caused by lactic acid accumulation.

In this case, vinegar can be of great benefit when massaged on the back, because it detoxifies the body to let the oxygen reach the muscles.

Coconut Oil With Camphor

Camphor has cooling properties, which can help in relieving the pain caused due to inflammation. One of the basic signs of inflammation is heat. Camphor decreases the intensity of the back pain.

Even though the underlying problem still remains, you can at least reduce the pain by massaging coconut oil mixed with camphor, as coconut oil penetrates the skin deeper than other oils.

White Willow Bark and Devil’s Claw

These herbs are believed to have anti-inflammatory qualities, because they contain a component called Salicin, very similar to the salicylic acid found in aspirin. This component is thought to reduce inflammation. In addition, devil’s claw possesses a compound called Harpagosides which has identical anti-inflammatory properties.

Sea Salts

Sea salts or unprocessed salts mixed in water and massaged onto the back relieve inflammation, which relieves your pain. Salt reduces edema or collection of fluid by inducing a difference in concentration gradient across the skin that it is applied on.

This makes unnecessary amounts of fluid to leave their space, reducing inflammation, a fact that is well demonstrated by shrinkage of skin of fingers when kept in salt water for long periods of time.

Yoga

Physical exercises can help your back to stay fit and yoga is one of the most useful methods, helping in strengthening the core muscles of your spine. Yoga exercises help the spine to stay erect without causing it to degenerate.

Asanas like Bhujangasana, Tadasan and Padmasan help you to attain a good posture, thus relaxing your muscles. Going for a walk everyday for 45 minutes and managing an optimal weight are the best methods to keep your back pain away. The right combination of these natural treatments coupled with few exercise will give you a healthy back, which is as good as new.
