Gargling with a mixture of warm water (1 cup) and salt (1/2 teaspoon) provides relief to this problem. Gargling several times throughout the day will help treating this condition. The mixture is saline, when it is mixed in the above proportions. Too much salt may dry the membranes, which makes the condition worse. Make sure to gargle gently, as too much force can aggravate the throat and also prolongs voice loss. Lemon juice can be included in the solution, as it stimulates saliva and also moistens the throat.
Gargling with a lukewarm solution of honey and lemon can reduce irritation and inflammation of the larynx. Take a bowl and squeeze about half a lemon and add honey to it gradually until you obtain a solution that flows freely. In case, you have added too much honey then you can include more lemon juice. Pour this mixture into your mouth. Tilt your head a little, holding the mixture at the back of the throat and avoid drinking it. Swish the warm solution back & forth. Repeat this process several times before spitting out. You can repeat this as often as required. Make sure that you do not gargle forcefully, as it can injure the vocal cords. Do this gently and avoid overdoing the gargling sound.
Garlic is known for its antibiotic effect. You can consume garlic soup that is seasoned with various herbs. There are a number of recipes for preparing the garlic soup. You can choose one that is easier to make. Also, you can suck on garlic slice, as the sliced garlic releases allicin, which is an antimicrobial substance. Allicin helps in killing bacteria, including some viruses.
The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger help in treating laryngitis. Make ginger tea using fresh ginger root. Steep the root in water for about 30 minutes. Sip this tea several times in a day. Also, you can add honey to the tea. Ginger soothes inflamed mucous membranes present in the larynx.
