Being a new mother is indeed a challenging task and one that requires you to work round the clock. Diaper rash is a very common yeast infection that affects newborns. It occurs when the skin gets irritated due to constant use of diapers. Diapers leave the skin moist and provide a conducive environment for the growth of candida yeast.
There are numerous OTC drugs that are used for treating diaper rash. But when it comes to newborns, you must always look for safer and natural solutions which will be mild on their skin, but offer mighty good results as well. Let’s familiarize ourselves with some natural methods to treat and prevent diaper rash in babies.
Yoghurt
One of the best remedies for all kinds of yeast infections of the body, yoghurt treatment can be extended to cure diaper rash in babies caused by yeast infection. Try and avoid wearing diapers all the time if your baby has diaper rash. Leave his/her butt open to allow the skin to remain dry.
During these intervals, apply yoghurt with live cultures on the area of diaper rash. Allow it to remain as long as you can. You may also smear some yoghurt on to the diaper to control the rash.
Calendula Oil
For diaper rashes that are caused due to the irritation of skin as a result of wearing diapers for a long time, a homemade cream can be made for protecting the skin while using a diaper.
Take a scoop of lanolin that you use for your chapped nipples and add some calendula oil to it to make it into a smooth paste of spreadable consistency. Apply this paste on the baby’s bottom and other areas affected with diaper rash. This will give a protective covering to the skin and prevent further rashes from surfacing.
Aloe Vera
Pure aloe vera can be extracted from the stalk and applied on the diaper rash to snub the diaper rash and prevent further rashes from appearing. Apply every day before wearing the diaper to keep the baby’s bottom smooth and dry.
Oatmeal
Your baby can be given an oatmeal bath to heal the skin affected with diaper rash. Add 1/4th cup of oatmeal to the warm water used for giving baby a bath. Soak him/her in the water for 10 minutes to nourish his/her skin with vitamin E and heal the rashes.
Cornstarch
Diaper rash is almost always caused due to moisture on the skin surface due to the prolonged usage of diapers. Remove the diaper and clean the baby’s genital areas. Use a soft cotton cloth for wiping the skin dry and apply cornstarch on the area. Leave it open for a few hours before putting on a fresh diaper again. Cornstarch is known to leave the skin dry by absorbing the excess moisture.
Calamine Lotion
Calamine is a quick remedy that can heal diaper rashes and prevent itching and burning sensation due to the rashes. Calamine will also keep the skin free from moisture and prevent diaper rash from occurring again.
