Excessive loss of water and mineral salts from the body is known as dehydration. Getting dehydrated is bad for your health. Though sudden dehydration can be managed, chronic dehydration can be fatal. It disturbs the whole metabolic process and can affect all the organs of your body. In the beginning the skin and mucus membranes will become dry. But if the condition is allowed to persist then the lack of fluid will engulf your body, and your health will start deteriorating.
You may be averse to taking water or do not get enough time at work to drink adequate water. You may be running or taking part in a game of soccer in humid weather. All of these can lead to dehydration. In case of sudden dehydration you can compensate the loss with plain water and mineral salts. Coconut water is a very good remedy for dehydration. But for chronic rehydration you need more than that. There are herbs that can save you from the perils of chronic dehydration. Let us look at some of these herbs.
Chamomile is a great rehydrating agent along with being an analgesic and de-stressing herb. It is great as a fluid replacement.
If you are suffering from sudden dehydration accompanied with cramps then chamomile tea can be one of the best herbal treatments for you.
This herb has one specific property. It helps the blood vessels on the surface of the skin to dilate and radiate heat. This reduces the body temperature and along with it the evaporation of water.
So you will lose less water as vapor and dehydration will be in check. However, if you are a pregnant woman or a nursing mother you should not take this herb.
This flower helps reduce body temperature and reduces the need to expel heat through evaporation. When evaporation comes down fluid retention in the body goes up and that has a positive effect on dehydration.
For the right dosage you should consult a doctor or a herbalist.
When you are suffering from dehydration you are most likely to have a persistent headache. Willow bark is very helpful in this situation.
It is also able to reduce the body temperature and therefore minimize the requirement of the body to evaporate water. This in turn increases fluid retention and helps you to recover from dehydration.
This is another herb that is useful in reducing body temperature resulting from dehydration. It brings down fever and headache. You can prepare yarrow tea to save yourself from dehydration.
However, if you are taking blood thinning medicines you should desist from taking this herb.
Rice water is a great rehydrating agent. Wash a plateful of rice and after two to three rinses take the rice water for drinking.
This will rehydrate you and defeat dehydration.
Like rice water the water of barley is also quite useful in replenishing the lost fluid as well as minerals. It will bring down the fever, cramps and excessive sweating if taken regularly.
So if you are a chronic sufferer from dehydration take a bowl of barley water every day.

Thank you for this! I live in AZ and it's been very difficult keeping up with the hydration because drinking straight water has been very heavy on my stomach.
Have you tried any of these recommendations? Which one?
Nance, thank you for asking!! I went to an herbalist in Phoenix for organic willow bark to make a tea with chamomille & stevia leaves. This helped me the best. Plus, I found out a month later from my post that I was pregnant..so I've also gotten started on the right type of vitamins & minerals which my body also needed. Something my doctor also recommended was alkaline water (water with a higher pH) because that was what I personally needed...definitely consulting your doctor seems to be the best first step should drinking water/herbal loose-leaf tea not help at first.
I'm not a doctor in any sense of the word either, so I don't want to recommend anything that might harm you or not be the best option for where your body is at...
Thanks for the quick response to my question. Congratulations on your pregnancy! I will try the willow bark first to see how my body responds. As far as the alkaline water, I've tried that and it didn't go well. Take care and thanks again!
If that didn't work, I could suggest going to the doctor to see if you have too much of certain vitamins/minerals because you might be wanting more water to flush it out...just a thought.
