7 Herbal Remedies For Convulsions

It is a disorder of the electric signals playing out in the brain. When this system malfunctions the orderly function of sending definite signals to different parts of the body collapses. This results in twitching of body muscles. This leads to convulsions where the body starts shaking uncontrollably. If you or any of your acquaintances is having more than one convulsion then you should immediately consult a doctor.

This is because repeated seizures can cause damage to the brain. Convulsions that affect the whole body are known as general seizure while those affecting only a part of the body such as legs are known as partial seizure. In partial seizures only a part of the brain is affected whereas in general seizure both lobes of the brain are affected. Though the immediate cause of convulsions is abnormality in electrical signals, there can be several underlying reasons.

You may be genetically predisposed to having convulsions; have a head injury; suffering from metabolic disorders such as malfunctioning of the kidneys, diabetes etc; taking drugs or excessive amounts of alcohol etc. The treatment for convulsions is long term and the mode of treatment depends on the severity of the malady. There are drugs for treating convulsions. However, these drugs are not always effective in treating convulsions. You can try herbs. There are some herbal remedies which can work wonder for convulsions. Let us look at some of these.

Herbal Remedies For Convulsions

Valerian

It is a antispasmodic herb. It has been found to be effective in treating convulsions. It is more of a long term remedy for convulsions than one to be applied on the spot when someone suffers from convulsions. This is because of its pronounced preventive action on convulsions.

It can help the body and mind to coordinate the various functions of the body. It increases energy and acts as a sedative on the nervous system. You can take 600 mg of valerian extract two hours before going to bed for one month. Possibility of recurrence of convulsions will be greatly reduced.

Lobelia

This is another anticonvulsant herb. It can control spasms such as those experienced in convulsions. The effect of lobelia has been studied by scientists. It is known as an adaptogen. It means that lobelia is effective in directing phytochemicals responsible for healing to the right place. It is also good as a detoxifier. It has been observed that lobelia can stop convulsions.

It works by enhancing the GABA release mechanism in the brain. In fact this herb is being seen as promising source of drug for manufacturing anticonvulsant drug. The herb needs to be taken in large quantities. While taking you must take care to see that it does not cause vomiting.

Gingseng

This herb with Chinese ancestry is good for the whole body as well as the brain. It acts as a tonic for the body. The anticonvulsant effect of ginseng has been studied clinically, and it has been seen that it is indeed effective in treating certain aspects of convulsions.

It can improve cognitive function. It is also helpful in de-stressing the brain. For this you need to have 400 mg of ginseng extract only once.

Mistletoe

It is a evergreen parasitic plant that has been used since ancient times specifically for treating convulsions. The young twigs and leaves of this herb are used as medicine. It used to be administered for healing the spleen which is believed to be the source of convulsions even in modern medicine.

You can make a decoction of mistletoe by boiling 2 ounces of smashed green mistletoe leaves in half a pint of water. Take one teaspoon of this liquid frequently throughout the day. Possibility of recurrence of convulsions will be reduced.

Black Cohosh

It is one of the herbs that is recommended even by some doctors for the treatment of convulsions. Several research publications have spoken highly about the efficacy of this herb. It is a very effective anti spasmodic and sedative herb.

In ancient times it used to be administered to epilepsy sufferers extensively. You can take 700 mg of this herb daily to ward off the dangers of convulsion.

Sage

It is used as a tranquilizing herb that does not have any side effects. However, you should have this herb in small quantities only to avoid any untoward incident.

Skullcap

This is one herb that is specifically used for convulsions and seizures. Traditionally it has been used to treat delirium. It can be used as a nerve tonic to pacify the nervous system and bring regularity to it. It is available as tincture.
