 Remedies For Melasma

Women between the ages of twenty to fifty years are affected by melasma which is a skin condition in which dark colored blotches which are either brown or darker than the natural skin color appear on the forehead, chin, cheeks and upper lip. It mostly affects women who are in their reproductive years especially women who are pregnant. This condition is caused by an imbalance in the hormones, birth control pills, genetic factors, and exposure to strong sunlight for long hours.

Women who take hormone replacement therapy are also liable to suffer from this condition. Certain medicines too can have an adverse effect and cause melasma. Cosmetics, commercial moisturizers and cleansers often irritate the skin and cause hyperpigmantation. In this condition, excess melanin is produced which stains the facial skin in large brown patches. Melasma is a detractive condition and women who suffer from it become very self conscious and feel ill at ease and become insecure.
