A muscle strain is a pulled muscle which happens when the muscle is stretched beyond its capacity and it tears unexpectedly. All the muscles of the body can get strained but the most commonly strained muscles are the lower back muscles, neck and shoulder muscles and the muscle located behind the thigh. If a muscle is overused or used improperly then it gets injured and bruised and results in a strain which causes sudden sharp and excruciating pain, soreness, swelling, limited movement, muscle spasms, bruising and discoloration, and a feeling of tightness within the affected muscle group.
Muscle strains occur due to fatigue and overwork. People who do not warm up before exercising rigorously and who do not have well toned or well conditioned muscles also suffer from frequent muscle strains. Stiff muscles which have poor flexibility and if exerted suddenly without gently stretching them at first can also tear suddenly and unexpectedly.
