Acid reflux occurs when the digestive juices flow upwards from the stomach into the esophagus. The esophagus is situated near the heart in the chest. The juices irritate the esophagus and cause a burning sensation which why acid reflux is also called heartburn. The esophageal sphincter contracts after the food is swallowed.

If, due to some reason the muscles are unable to contract then the stomach acids come up towards the esophagus. A very heavy meal, lying down immediately after eating, excess alcohol and caffeine, fried and processed foods all these can induce acid reflux.

The main symptoms of this condition are gas, bloating, a bitter taste in the mouth, wheezing, coughing and flatulence. Life style changes and certain herbs can relieve all problems related to the stomach without any side effects.

5 Herbal Remedies For Acid Reflux

German Chamomile

This herb has great relaxing powers and is very useful for all kinds of stomach problems. It is a safe and well tested herb which brings tremendous relief in acid reflux. It can be used as often as you want without causing side effects. Even infants are administered with this herb to treat colic. Boil a cup of water and steep one teaspoon of German chamomile into it for ten minutes after which strain the tea and drink three cups daily.

Fennel

Fennel has great soothing and relaxing properties. It reduces the stomach acid and brings great relief in the heartburn. It also prevents the acid reflux by strengthening the muscles of the sphincter.

Boil one litre of water and add three teaspoons of fennel seeds to it. Boil for five minutes then turn off the heat. Keep drinking this water throughout the day. Prepare a fresh batch for the next day.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a widely used herbal remedy for all kinds of digestive and stomach disorders. It has powerful anti-inflammatory properties which relieve the heart burn and soothe the irritated esophagus. Its alkaline nature neutralizes the acidity and eliminates such symptoms such as bloating, gas and flatulence. Add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water and drink it before a meal.

Fenugreek

This herb has powerful medicinal values which heal and cure innumerable diseases and ailments. It is a rich source of essential minerals and vitamins which provide vital strength to the muscles in the sphincter and help them to contract easily and properly.

Fenugreek also soothes the irritated esophagus and helps in digestion and relives the heart burn. Grind fenugreek seeds to a fine powder and store it in a jar. Swallow a teaspoon of this powder with a cup of warm milk every night before going to bed.

Anise

Since ancient times, anise has been used for medicinal purposes. Its valuable medicinal properties bring great relief in acid reflux.  It has huge carminative, sedative and antispasmodic properties which not only aid digestion and eliminate the acids and gases from the stomach but also prevent the stomach juices from being refluxed. Chew a teaspoon of anise seeds after every meal.
