Strep throat is also known as streptococcal pharyngitis. It is caused by the group A streptococcus bacteria which inflame the throat, lymph nodes and the tonsils. Though anyone can suffer from this condition, children and young adults are more prone to it. It is a contagious infection and is easily spread by person to person contact or by standing next to an infected person.
Droplets of nasal secretions and saliva are spread in the air when sneezing or coughing and they easily contaminate the surrounding environment and when someone breathes this contaminated air, becomes infected. The symptoms begin with a sudden severe sore throat and difficulty in swallowing.
Then there is fever and the tonsils become tender, swollen and painful. White or yellow spots appear on the throat and the lymph nodes too get affected. This infection should be treated right away otherwise it can lead to kidney complications and rheumatic fever.
5 Herbal Remedies For Strep Throat
Sage
Sage is a very good herb for strep throat. It has powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties which kill the bacteria successfully, ease the swelling and the pain and also soothe the inflamed throat and tonsils.
Boil a cup of water and add a few fresh sage leaves to it. Boil for a minute then turn of the heat. Allow it to stand for ten minutes then strain the tea and drink three cups daily. You can also chew the fresh leaves three or four times daily.
Chamomile
This herb has powerful analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which bring great relief in the soreness and pain. Boil a cup of water and steep one heaped teaspoon of dried chamomile into it for ten minutes. Strain the tea, stir in a teaspoon of honey and drink three to four cups daily to get quick relief from the infection.

Licorice
Nothing can be better than licorice for relieving all kinds of throat infections. This herb has powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which eradicate the infection swiftly and effectively and soothe the mucous membranes in the throat.
Take a piece of the root and keep it in your mouth with a little lump sugar. Keep chewing the root slowly and suck on the sugar. Do this, three or four times daily till completely cured.
Pipli
Pipli is a very important herb in ayurvedic medicine. It has powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic and antioxidant properties which make short work of the infection and cure the inflamed tonsils, lymph nodes and the throat rapidly. Heat a griddle and put five or six pipli onto it and roast them till they puff up. Eat the roasted pipli with a little honey twice daily.
Eucalyptus
This herb has powerful anti-inflammatory and antiseptic action which cures all kinds of respiratory disorders and infections rapidly. Take a few fresh leaves of eucalyptus and boil them for five minutes in a glass of water. Strain the decoction and use it for a gargle. Gargle for ten minutes. Allow the water to sit in the throat for a minute before spitting it out. Use the gargle twice daily.
