Dry socket also known as alveolar osteitis occurs after a tooth extraction. It is not a very common condition and can be easily treated at home. After a tooth extraction, the pain and discomfort go away after a few days but if the pain still persists then you can be said to have a dry socket.The socket is the hole in the bone from where the tooth has been pulled out.When a tooth is extracted, a blood clot forms in the socket. This blood clot acts as a protection to the bone and the nerves underneath the bone.

When this blood clot becomes dislodged the bone and the nerves are left unprotected and exposed to food, fluid and air which can cause infection.People who smoke a lot, practice poor oral hygiene or have an unusual trauma during tooth extraction are liable to a dry socket. An unpleasant taste in the mouth, bad breath, pain and redness are some of the common symptoms of dry socket.

Effective Home Remedies Dry Socket

Curd

Home made curd which is full of culture is the most natural antibiotic. It abounds in healthy bacteria which combat the bad bacteria in the mouth and effect quick healing. Be sure to eat a cup of unsweetened curd daily with your meals.

Also apply a thick coating of the curd to the bone from where the tooth has been extracted. Curd will soothe the raw bone and provide relief in the pain.

Black Tea

Black tea has natural healing and curative properties because of the tannins present in it. These tannins have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which destroy the infection and soothe the swollen bone and tissues.

Prepare some black tea and rinse your mouth with it three times daily. You can also place a cold black teabag in the place where the tooth has been removed. Keep the bag pressed in place with your teeth.

Neem

Neem is the best remedy for dry socket. Neem has exceptionally powerful antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties because of which it has been used since time immemorial to cure and heal all kinds of infection. Grind some neem leaves to a fine paste.

Make a ball out of the paste and insert it in the socket. Leave it there for fifteen minutes after which rinse your mouth. In addition to this chew four or five tender leaves of neem for a week.

Mustard Oil

Mustard oil brings relief in several ailments and diseases because of its powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. This age old remedy strengthens the bones and muscles in the body and maintains the health of the entire body.

Take some mustard oil in the palm of your hand. Add some salt to it. Mix well. With your clean finger massage the socket with this mixture. Massage your gums too thoroughly for a few minutes. Rinse your mouth with warm water.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera will reduce the swelling and bring relief in the pain. It will also destroy any infection present in the socket and in the mouth. Slit a fresh aloe leaf and remove its gel.

Chew the gel with your teeth until it is thoroughly mixed with the saliva. Swirl the juice in your mouth for five minutes after which rinse your mouth with water. Use this remedy three times daily.
