Brittle bones are caused by bone loss. Bone is a living tissue which mostly consists of collagen and calcium phosphate. Collagen is a protein which comprises of soft framework and calcium phosphate is a mineral which strengthens and toughens the framework. Both these substances combine together to make the bones strong, flexible and resilient as a result of which the bones are able to endure stress.
During the living process of a human being, the old bones are replaced with the new bones and this process is faster when one is young and still in the formative years. The bones gain in density and strength and become heavier. After the age of thirty, the formation of new bones slows down and women lose bones faster than men. This leads to weakness and brittle bones which means that the bones become liable to fractures and breakage. Sometimes the bones also become brittle due to insufficient amounts of collagen and poor quality of collagen which cause poor muscle tone especially in the arms and legs and loose joints.
It is important to keep the bones strong and minimize or slow down the bone loss so that the bones do not become brittle. Calcium is crucial for healthy bones and the best way to enhance its level in the body is to drink to two glasses of milk everyday.
If you are worried about your weight you can drink skim milk or low fat milk which is equally rich in calcium. You should also eat a cup of homemade curd with every meal to fortify your bones.
You should exercise daily on a regular basis to strengthen your bones and to improve your overall health. A sedentary lifestyle leads to rapid bone loss and exercise in any form actually helps to increase the bone mass.
Elderly people can do light exercises such as brisk walking or cycling or swimming which will slow the bone loss associated with aging and keep them in a healthy condition.
Plums are known to regenerate bone tissue and increase the density thus keeping the bones strong and resilient and less liable to fractures. Research shows that plums can even reverse bone loss because of their huge reserves of polyphenols which not only help to rebalance the bone building cycle but also helps in bone formation. Eat four or five plums on a regular basis.
Gooseberry has amazing rejuvenating and anti-aging properties. It is a very useful remedy for brittle bones because it enhances the production of collagen and prevents cell degeneration. Its stupendous reserves of vitamin C and polyphenols combat the harmful free radicals and prevent bone loss. Swallow one teaspoon of amla powder with a glass of water every morning.
Mustard oil is extremely rich in calcium, magnesium and omega 3 fatty acids which not only strengthen the bones but also regenerate the bone tissue and prevent bone loss. Warm some mustard oil and massage your whole body with it for twenty minutes every morning before your bath.
