The gallbladder is a hollow sac located just below the liver. It stores the bile produced by the liver and releases it to the small intestine to emulsify the fats in partly digested food. When the bile is stored in the gallbladder it becomes more concentrated. This increased strength makes it more potent to emulsify the fats.
If the bile is not completely emptied from the gallbladder then it becomes stagnant and turns into a thick slush which eventually turns into small hard stones. Most gallbladder problems are caused by these gallstones and sometimes due to infection which results in inflammation. Often the bile starts thickening in the liver itself and is unable to flow smoothly out of it, to the gallbladder. This leads to insufficient bile and hence improper digestion of the fats causing symptoms like gripping pain in the upper abdomen, digestive problems like belching, bloating, heartburn, nausea, and fatty stools.
