Diet For Kidney Infection Treatment

Share

Never ignore a urinary tract infection, as you may not be able to make out if it is Pyelonephritis, a bacterial UTI (urinary tract infection) that travels up to your kidneys to infect and damage it. If left untreated further, the infection can also spread into your blood stream which can be quite fatal!

The diet for kidney infection treatment involves food that you should not eat or eat sparingly to prevent the aggravation of this infection in your body. The dietary recommendations also include foods that you should generally eat to strengthen your immune system and to flush out toxins from your body.

Best 5 Diet Tips For Kidney Infection Treatment

Avoid High Sodium Foods

High sodium foods such as common salt, baking soda, baking powder, soy sauce, bouillon cubes, cured meats, pickled foods, table cheese, and others belonging to the category should be avoided. Kidney infection causes a rise in blood pressure, as it does not flush out the body toxins properly, when infected.

High sodium will further elevate blood pressures which will negatively influence heart health. Hence, high sodium foods should be avoided or eaten in moderation.

Have Clear Liquids

Clear liquids are liquids that are transparent at room temperature. These include water, clear fruit juices, juicy fruits and vegetables, soups and broths.

Clear liquids are rich in fluid content which is very essential for flushing out  the infectious toxins from the human body.

Moderate Protein

Normally, kidneys are involved in filtering out a number of substances from the body, protein being one of them. An infected kidney does not function properly, on account of which it should not be stressed. Protein filtration through the kidneys highly stresses the kidneys, due to which its consumption in high amounts is not advisable.

It is better to eat protein in moderation (not more than 0.6 gms, per kg of body weight. Vegetables can be consumed in place of animal meat, as these contain less protein. Breads and fruits are also low in proteins.

Low Potassium Diet

Persons with kidney infections are generally asked to avoid foods that are high in potassium. This is because the kidneys cannot flush out the excretory potassium efficiently, resulting in the building up of potassium deposits in the body. A diet that is low in potassium will, therefore, not add to the already potassium excess in the body.

Though 4700 mg of potassium is required on a daily basis, you restrict yourself to 1500-2700 mg on a daily basis. You should eat low-potassium, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Fruits and vegetables such as apple, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, cucumber, onion, cauliflower, cabbage, mushrooms corns, etc. can be eaten.

Yogurt

Yogurt is good for the digestive system, as it introduces probiotic gut bacteria into your stomach.

It is also effective during kidney infections, as yogurt contains proteins that can boost the body’s immunity against the pathogenic bacteria. The yogurt proteins also help in recovering the damaged tissue.

Always follow a restricted diet that is prescribed by your dietitian. It can be dangerous to implement dietary restrictions without clinical supervision.
