Your diet also plays a major role in improving or destroying your heart health.

Persons suffering from cardiovascular diseases should make their dietary choices with extreme caution, as diet directly influences heart health. In general, the dietary intake should be moderate. Foods that improve the levels of healthy cholesterol in your body, lower blood pressure and blood sugar, and maintain healthy body weight should be consumed. Along with food, exercising and eliminating bad lifestyle habits such as smoking, help in improving heart health.

Fish

Fish is a good source of Omega- 3 fatty acids, which are good for heart health. The omega-3 fatty acids protect the heart against atherosclerosis and stroke.

These contain protein and healthy nutrients too. The American heart association recommends two servings of salmon and other fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, on a weekly basis.

Blueberries

Blueberries have been discovered to impressively boost heart health. These berries contain anthocyanins (antioxidants), vitamin C and fiber, all of which promote heart health and prevent the chances of a heart attack in persons consuming it.

As these are available throughout the year, these can be included in your daily diet. Blueberries can be enjoyed as it is, or used as a topping on a number of delicious dishes such as fruit salads, ice cream and sweet breads.

Table Salt

Reducing salt intake to less than 1500 mg per day is recommended for promoting heart health. This is because common salt adversely affects the heart in a number of ways.

It increases blood pressure and promotes retention of water in the body. These conditions make your heart exert more than its normal capacity and thus aggravate symptoms of cardiovascular diseases such as Congestive Heart Failure.

Caffeine Free Foods

Avoid foods containing caffeine, as it is not suitable for a number of heart conditions, particularly arrhythmia.  Caffeine is seen to increase the heart rate and cause palpitations in persons with arrhythmic hearts.

This may result in chest pain or lightheadedness. It can also affect the conduction system of the heart. Coffee, soft drinks, cola, chocolate, and tea are common foods containing caffeine. Their caffeine-free versions can be consumed.

Alcohol

Alcohol is found to generally weaken heart health when consumed liberally. It is responsible for alcoholic cardiomyopathy, and a variety of arrhythmias. Alcohol is found to injure cardiac cells and damage them. Hence, alcohol should be avoided completely or indulged in moderately.

Oatmeal

The consumption of oatmeal and dishes in which it is a major component should be encouraged, as it keeps the arteries clear and lowers the levels of LDL cholesterol in the body. Besides, it also contains potassium, folate and omega-3 fatty acids, which are all good for heart health.
