Examples of such foods can include apples, bananas, bread, whole wheat crackers, baked chips, rice, rice cakes, lean meats, egg whites, carrots, broccoli, green beans, and peas. If you crave your sweets, you can opt for baked or low calorie ones. However, avoid chocolate or mint based sweets because these can aggravate the condition.
Binge eating is a major trigger for hiatal hernia. If you eat excessive food at a single time, chances are high that it will put unwanted pressure on the stomach, thus worsening the situation even more.
Instead, opt for small but regular meals. Also, do not eat hurriedly. Eat in a calm environment so that you get to enjoy the food and also avoid pressurizing the stomach too much.
For controlling hiatal hernia, it is important to minimize the use of butter, sauces and oils, in case you cannot avoid them completely. Also, it is better to use cooking spray rather than oil because it minimizes the use of oil.
Another crucial strategy for controlling hiatal hernia is to drink enough water throughout the day. This way, you can keep the stomach calm and avoid heartburn that often accompanies hiatal hernia. Also, if you have hiatal hernia, it is better to avoid coffee. But if you are still craving for it desperately, opt for the decaffeinated version.
You can also choose to drink herbal teas that have less caffeine. In general, if you have hiatal hernia, avoid spicy or oily foods. Instead, eat more of natural foods such as fruits, low fat dairy products, vegetables and lean meat. That way, you will lead a healthier life.
