Diet Tips For Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes painful inflammation in the joints. The joints become snarly and swollen. Most adults suffer from this condition and it gets worse with age. Women suffer more from this type of arthritis as compared to men.

It mostly begins in women between the ages of 30 and 60. In men, rheumatoid arthritis seems to occur much later in life. No special diet is known that can cure rheumatoid arthritis completely, but some dietary changes do help in making you feel better.  Always consult with your doctor before you make any changes to your diet as it can affect you adversely if you make the wrong choices.

Diet For Rheumatoid Arthritis

Foods Containing Omega-3 Fats

Foods rich in omega-3 can be beneficial in giving you relief from the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Have them regularly in order to get the best benefits.

Oily fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines and trouts contain high quantities of omega-3 fats. Increase their consumption to bring down the inflammation.

Add Beneficial Spices To Your Food

Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized with an inflammation of the joints. Spices do not just add flavour to your food, but are also beneficial in combating the effects of rheumatoid arthritis.

They help to fight the inflammation in the joints and also bring down the swelling. Add spices like ginger and turmeric regularly to all your meals. They have strong anti-inflammatory properties and should be an essential part of any rheumatoid arthritis diet.

Nuts And Seeds

Nuts and seeds are very healthy sources of proteins and provide your body with healthy fats. If you do not prefer to eat meat, nuts and seeds are the best alternative. The added benefit is, the healthy fats help destroy the enzymes in the cells that cause the inflammation.

Some of the good sources of proteins are almonds, walnuts and brazil nuts. However, eat the unsalted variety if you do not want that excess salt adding to your woes! Pumpkin seeds also help reduce the inflammation in the joints. Sprinkle them over your food or make a powder and have two teaspoons mixed in water.

Consume Foods With Anti-Oxidant Properties

When you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, your body is fighting the infection with all its might. Antioxidants help the body to fight this infection and maintain the health of collagen, thus delaying joint deterioration. Eat plenty of vitamin C rich foods, such as guavas, lemons, peaches and mangoes.

Carrots, pumpkin and spinach contain high levels of beta-carotene which is a powerful anti-oxidant. Have healthy servings of all these vegetables and fruits everyday in order to get relief from the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Foods You Should Avoid

Rheumatoid arthritis patients should take care to avoid foods that increase the body fat levels. The extra body fats contributes to putting more stress on the already painful joints.

Avoid refined sugars, red meats, processed food and high-fat dairy products. Animal fats and oils are known to increase production of enzymes that encourage inflammation. So avoid them as far as possible. Also, limit your intake of table salt.
