Dietary Changes For Curing Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Share

Irritable bowel syndrome (also known as IBS) is a common condition that has symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits and discomfort. People suffering from IBS are often forced to change their eating habits because certain foods often trigger this condition.

Unfortunately, no same food acts as the trigger for people suffering from IBS. More specifically, this means that while a particular food may act as the trigger for a person experiencing IBS, the same food could completely safe for another person who is suffering from IBS as well. Still, there are certain dietary guidelines, which you should follow if you are suffering from IBS.

Diet For Curing Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Include Plain Yogurt In Your Eating Plan

IBS causes inflammation of the inner gut lining and therefore, including plain yogurt in your diet plan can be a good idea. Yogurt contains good bacteria and alkaline PH that counter the irritation perfectly.

While yogurt is a good option for patients of IBS, the same rule doesn’t apply for other milk products. Many IBS patients suffer after eating milk products, so be careful. However, you can easily eat fermented milk products such as curd or yogurt.

Choose Foods That Contain Soluble Fiber

In many cases, doctors suggest a high fiber diet for people suffering from gas, bloating or constipation. However, for patients of IBS, all types of fiber may not be suitable.

If you are suffering from IBS, it is better to opt for foods that contain soluble fiber. Examples of foods that are high in soluble fiber include apple, peach, plum, oatmeal, oat bran, beans, peas, carrots, broccoli, and brussel sprouts.

Opt For Smaller Meals

For patients of IBS, opting for smaller meals, rather than large ones is a good idea. This is because when you eat smaller meals throughout the days, it allows your digestive system to handle the meal load perfectly. This in turn, ensures quicker absorption, better digestion, and lower risk of inflammation of the inner gut lining.

Eat More Foods That Contain Antioxidants

Studies have revealed that oxidative stress released in the body can increase IBS. So, the point is to eat foods that will decrease this stress. Now, studies have further revealed that antioxidants can reduce this stress. So, it will be beneficial for you if you eat foods rich in antioxidants. Examples include pumpkin, strawberries, bell peppers, oranges and lime.

It is important to understand that these above mentioned tips are only general guidelines. The foods that your body can tolerate can be drastically different from any other person experiencing the same problem. For this reason, it is important to get a personalized diet. So, get in touch with an expert dietician as soon as possible.

Avoid Spicy And Fried Foods

If you are suffering from IBS, it is better to avoid spicy and fried foods. This is because these foods are usually high in oil and spices, which might irritate the stomach and lead to IBS. Of course, indulging once in a while is fine. However, even during these occasions, you should ensure that you do not eat too much of these spicy foods.
