A callus can be tender and painful and filled with water. It then hardens up into tough skin if the water is not drained out. Calluses are notoriously common and generally heal on their own. However you can get the much needed relief from calluses with the help of some simple home remedies.
Sometimes the toe nails grow without our awareness and dig into the sides of the surrounding toes thus causing friction, pain and the development of calluses.
As a habit, make sure you trim your nails and keep them as short as possible. Trim hangnails if any as they too can be rough and abrasive.
Mild and soft calluses can be treated with the help of hot foot soaks. Heat some water in a foot tub and add a few drops of potassium permanganate which acts as a disinfectant. Soak your feet in this water for 20 minutes or so.
This will soften the calluses and promote healing of the foot. Put some Epsom salts in your bath water as another alternative. Follow this up with a moisturizing routine that gently massages the foot. This will promote blood circulation and help the calluses to heal.
If your calluses are worsening, use corn pads or callus pads which reduce the pressure from the affected area. This allows the callus to soften and heal. You can also cut a piece of moleskin and use them as callus pads.
Petroleum jelly is a good home remedy for preventing the formation of calluses. Just rub a thick layer of petroleum jelly on the affected areas of the foot before covering them with socks.
This will reduce the amount of friction felt in that area.
It is very important that you wear the right and comfortable shoes. Your shoes should fit snugly on your entire foot without causing excess friction. This is one of the reasons why corns and calluses develop.
Use a pumice stone to rub and scrub your feet especially the sole area where calluses tend to develop and form. The pumice stone softens the rough skin areas of the foot.
If you are uncertain, you can ask a beautician to do a proper pedicure for you which helps to effectively get rid of the calluses.
Gently massage your foot with castor oil while you have calluses. Castor oil promotes quick healing and helps the calluses to heal. It also promotes relaxation.
If you have calluses very often, try covering the callused area with thick socks. Choose socks with thick soles that reduce friction on the callus and prevent it from worsening with time.
These simple home remedies can effectively help to deal with calluses. Take necessary care of your feet and make sure you take all measures to prevent calluses from forming.
