The median nerve controls the movement and sensation in the index finger, the middle finger, the ring finger and the thumb. It passes from the forearm into the hand through a narrow and rigid tunnel, located at the base of the hand, called the carpal tunnel. This tunnel is mostly composed of bones and ligaments. When the median nerve gets pinched due to pressure, it causes pain and numbness. This is known as carpal tunnel syndrome.
It is mostly caused by forceful and continuous use of the hands in tasks such as using hand tools, strumming musical instruments, typing or clicking the mouse. Certain diseases like rheumatism, arthritis and hyperthyroidism can also contribute to this condition.
Initially there is a tingling sensation in the fingers and the thumb and as the condition advances, the inflamed nerve causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the wrists as well as the thumb and fingers. The power to grip or hold objects decreases drastically and one is unable to perform even simple tasks such as eating or drinking.
