Effective Home Remedies For Diarrhea

Diarrhea in most cases is caused by gastrointestinal disturbances or food poisoning. Loose stools are a way by which the body gets rid of something undesirable form the body. Other symptoms like vomiting and nausea may or may not accompany diarrhea. Diarrhea needs to be arrested especially in small children otherwise, it can lead to dehydration and fatalities.

Bacteria and other microorganisms are primarily responsible for diarrhea in the body. Here are some simple and effective home remedies for diarrhea, which can help to eliminate it from the body.

Home Remedies For Diarrhea

Ginger tea

Sip on some mild ginger tea especially if you are suffering from stomach cramps and nausea. Ginger has properties that help to quell nausea.

Crush or grate some fresh ginger and infuse it well in the water before preparing the tea. Keep sipping on this tea throughout the day. Do not take in too much of it because it can lead to severe acidity in the stomach.

Carrot juice

Fresh fruit juices can be started by patients suffering from diarrhea once they start to feel a little better. However, it is better to tread with caution. Stick to simple vegetable juices like carrot juice, which help to make the stools less watery. This in turn can minimize the chances of acute dehydration in the body.

Crackers and toast

If you are suffering from a very mild form of diarrhea, make sure you eat a relatively bland diet. Stay away from oily and spicy toast and instead have crackers or dry toast. This will not only give you energy but also help to solidify the stools.

Khichdi (Indain Dish)

Khichdi is a simple Indian dish made up of boiled dal and rice. Take a teaspoon of ghee in a cooker and add a pinch of turmeric and some cumin seeds to the ghee until the seeds begin to splutter. Now add half a cup of rice and ¼ Th cup of yellow moong dal. Add salt to taste and cook the rice and dal with sufficient water so that the khichdi is a bit watery. This is an excellent food choice for diarrhea patients especially as they start to recover from the infection.

Bananas and tamarind

Take a ripe banana and add a teaspoon of tamarind pulp and a pinch of salt to the banana pulp. Now consume this twice a day.

This is an excellent home remedy for diarrhea as it helps the stools to harden and also reduces the frequency of bathroom visits. Bananas are also a powerhouse of energy and help to give energy and reduce fatigue and weakness in the body.

Dates and honey

Take some ripe dates and soak them in water for some time until they become soft. Deseed them and grind them into a soft paste. Now add honey to this paste and consume it 3-4 times in a day to get relief from diarrhea.

Curry leaves to the rescue

Curry leaves are an excellent remedy for any kind of stomach ailment especially diarrhea. They have a pleasant aroma and taste and can be consumed especially when one is suffering from diarrhea and nausea.

You can temper some plain dal with curry leaves and have this 2-3 times a day. Make sure the dal is not very heavy but should be of watery consistency.

Nutmeg powder

Nutmeg powder is a popular spice used in Indian cooking. You can grind some nutmegs and add the powder to your mashed fruits like bananas. The powder will immediately help to stop or reduce the diarrhea.

Chamomile tea

Once you start suffering from diarrhea, you will not feel like eating much. Instead, make sure you take enough fluids throughout the day.

Keep sipping on herbal teas like chamomile tea which is mildly relaxing and also eases tummy discomfort especially stomach cramps.

Buttermilk

One of the most cooling and refreshing things to consume in violent cases of diarrhea is a glass of cold buttermilk. Buttermilk is made of curd that is shaken and mixed well with water to make it of a drinking consistency. You can add some carom seed powder and a pinch of salt to the buttermilk to make it tasty. Buttermilk works by destroying intestinal parasites and enhancing the good flora and healthy bacteria in the gut. If it suits you, have it at least 3-4 times in a day for best results.

Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds are also a useful and powerful home remedy and help to quell loose and watery stools.

Lightly crush some fenugreek seeds and stir fry them in a little bit of butter so that they are partially cooked. Now add these seeds to your buttermilk and drink this up. You will immediately begin to feel better.

Mint juice

Fresh mint leaves are a brilliant cure for chronic or severe diarrhea. Take a handful of fresh mint leaves straight from the garden, and grind them to a paste. You can alternately grind the mint leaves with water and strain the juice from the paste. Now take a teaspoon of this juice along with a teaspoon of limejuice and honey. This will reduce the severity of the symptoms and make you feel better. You can repeat the treatment 2-3 times a day.

Drumstick juice

Drumstick juice can be quite bitter but it is a good remedy against diarrhea. Take a teaspoon of drumstick juice and mix it well with a teaspoon of honey and some tender coconut water. Now drink this juice several times a day to get relief from diarrhea.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate has astringent properties that help to give relief from diarrhea. You can eat the fruit raw or have pomegranate juice with a pinch of pepper and salt. Not only is it healthy but it also has a rich dose of antioxidants that help to boost your immunity against germs.

With the help of these home remedies, you can treat diarrhea without having to go through the trouble of seeing a doctor. Of course if you do not get respite or your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to see a doctor immediately.
