Pain in the heels can be quite debilitating and can tamper with our daily lives. Things like use of high heels, improper gait, use of inadequate footwear during exercise, injury, conditions like bone spur, obesity etc. can cause severe heel pain. There are some great home remedies that can be tried for treating heel pain. But remember that all heel pain may not be relieved through home remedies and in such cases, be prompt so as to visit a doctor to identify the root cause.
Cold treatment involves the use of ice packs on the arch of the heel for treating the pain. Take an ice cube and apply on the heel for some time. This will numb the pain and offer instant relief. It will also reduce any swelling or inflammation on the heel. You may also use a cold can on the heels to get the same result. Make sure that you take adequate rest after this instead of walking around immediately.
Sometimes the use of improper shoes, especially during exercise can cause heel pain. Use good supportive shoes which can support the arch of the heel. This is especially important if you have plantar fasciitis or have overpronation. High heels too can cause heel pain. Avoid high heels and shoes with little arch support in such cases.
Orthotics or inserts inside the shoes will give a cushioning support to your heels. Various types of supports like heel pads, cups, inserts that are full length and arch supports are available. Assess your condition and opt for the best one that suits your problem. Heel pads will slightly raise the heels so that the pain associated with plantar fascia can be reduced a great deal.
Stretching of the feet and legs will help in relieving the tension and also relaxing the leg and foot muscles, thereby reducing pain. When the calf muscles are under tension, it causes pain in the heels. Stretching your legs often will help in relieving this tension and attaining relaxation and relief.
Sometimes too much pressure on the heels due to obesity is the cause for heel pain. In such cases, the only way to reduce the pain is through weight loss. Make it a point to incorporate some cardio exercises like walking, cycling etc. in your daily routine. This will help you keep your weight under check and attain an optimum weight that will help ease the pressure on your heels and reduce pain as well.
Too much walking, running and standing too can cause heel pain. In such cases, all you need is adequate rest to ease the stress on your heels. If you have been overusing your heels, it is best to assess your activity and reduce the stress on your heels. Give adequate rest to your heels for a few days so that the heels recover from the friction and the pain will be removed as well.
