Pink eye also known as conjunctivitis is the infection and swelling of the outermost layer of the eye and the membranes which line the eyelids. This lining is known as the conjunctiva and when it is exposed to bacteria or other harmful elements the tears help to wash away the bacteria and irritants and protect the conjunctiva from infection.
Tears also contain antibodies which kill bacteria and other infection causing microbes. Conjunctivitis is mainly caused by bacteria and viruses and being very contagious is easily spread from one person to another.
Other causes for pink eye are allergies, certain diseases, exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins, bacteria and fungi and vitamin D deficiency. The main symptoms are burning and itching in the eyes, blurred vision, watery eyes and gritty feeling in the eyes.
Cow’s milk has an abundance of probiotics which strengthen the immune system and help it to function optimally. These healthy bacteria kill the offending infection causing bacteria quickly and efficiently.
Apply raw cow milk to both the eyes. As soon as you apply the milk the healing process will start instantly. Apply frequently to alleviate the itching and burning in the eyes. You can also use raw goat milk if cow milk is not available.
Make some curd at home. Skim the clear liquid part of the curd and apply it to the eyes four or five times daily. Curd is full of cultured bacteria that crowds out the harmful bacteria and effects rapid healing.
Its cooling effect soothes the inflamed eyes and gets rid of the gritty sensation. It will also help wash away other impurities from the eyes and alleviate itching.
Boric acid has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties which bring quick relief in the symptoms of pink eye. Take some warm water into a bowl. Mix one teaspoon of boric acid with the warm water. Take a cotton ball and dip it into the solution.
Squeeze out the excess water and spread the cotton over the eyelids. Keep it there until it loses the warmth then dip again and repeat the process. Use a fresh solution and a fresh cotton ball for the other eye.

Apply the chilled compress to the eye. Dip again into the cool water and repeat the process for ten minutes. For the other eye use a fresh bowl of chilled water and a fresh compress. For hot compress, use hot water instead of cold water.
The moisture from the compress will soothe the inflamed eyes and provide tremendous relief in the redness and itchiness. Apply the compress three or four times daily.
