When pus forms and collects in the centre of the tooth it is known as tooth abscess. It is mostly caused by bacterial infection. It can result from either trauma to the tooth or if the enamel gets chipped openings form into it which allow the bacteria to infect the pulp of the tooth. Gum diseases such as gingivitis and pyorrhea can also cause tooth abscess.
The infection spreads from the root of the tooth to the bones supporting the tooth and causes inflammation of the tissues within the tooth. Pus collects in the abscess and results in toothache as well as in tooth decay. The main symptoms are sensitivity to hot and cold, continuous pain in the tooth, bad breath, pain when chewing, swollen gums, fever and bitter taste in the mouth. It is necessary to treat the abscess right away to prevent further damage to the tissues and bone.

Nothing works better than an antiseptic itself....LISTERINE. Gargle and hold on area for 30 seconds. Twice daily ....kills the abcess no matter how bad it is....and kind of fast. Maybe within 48 hrs. ..or less.
Use salt at your own risk. It usually works.....unless the salt is not COMPLETELEY DRY. Properties change if stored in a moist area such as a bathroom....or if wet...which if applied to an abcess tooth can cause an adverse reaction making the problem drasticly worse. Something awful.
