The primary reason for developing ADHD is the deficiency or lack of certain chemicals in the nervous system coupled with genetic and environmental factors. The children having ADHD shows difficulty to pay attention, to stay focused, in controlling their behavior and most of these kids would be hyperactive.
Depression, learning disability and lack of sleep may also be associated with ADHD. Even though there are treatments for ADHD, many alternative home treatments can be tried to cure this disorder.
Sugar especially refined sugar plays a major role in worsening the symptoms of ADHD. Sugar when gets in to the body increases the blood sugar level rapidly leading to a rise in adrenalin level in the body. Increased adrenalin makes the kid hyperactive and as and when the adrenalin levels falls a decrease in activity can be noticed.
Hence better to avoid foods that contain refined sugar rather include more fiber rich foods that can keep the adrenalin levels at check and maintain the activity of the child. Similarly ADHD patients should take meals at regular intervals and should include more complex carbohydrates and proteins in the meals to get steady and lasting energy and to improve the concentration.
Similarly intake of foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids also helps to improve the mental focus. Foods rich with omega 3 fatty acids include salmon, sardines, tuna, fortified milk, flax seed etc. Besides taking good foods avoid certain food items like caffeine, artificial flavorings, preservatives and colors in food in order to decrease the hyperactivity of the child.
Help your child to exercise regularly because increased physical activity helps to boost the dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain and improves the attention and focus of the child and reduce the hyperactivity. Exercise causes almost the similar results as that of the ADHD medication but without any side effects. More over exercise improves the mood and reduce the stress, depression and anxiety and help the child to sleep better.
Children having ADHD would like to hear the appreciation and loving word and they should get a feeling that they are being loved. Focus on the positive aspects of your child rather than focusing the negative aspects that may harm your relationship with your child and may also affect his self-esteem and self-confidence.
Find out a positive behavior of your child which you may complement daily and make him understand that you love him very much. Try to remain patient when your child loses his temper which helps the child to calm down easily. Also ensure that the child sleeps well and spend some time with him daily.
Help the child to learn behavior management skills and a professional with training ADHD related children can help your child to learn new skills and thus kids can control their stress, anger and impulsive behaviors well.
