Sleep Disorders, also called as insomnia is a disturbed or abnormal pattern of sleep due to no obvious reasons. This disorder pertains to strained ways of modern lifestyle that leads to stress, overwork and certain health conditions that affect sleep.

To be able to get a good sleep can be a struggling job for many people but it is really important for good health and an active life to have a sound sleep. Sleep disorders also arise from our unusual bed timings after TV, laptop and late night dinners creating a chaos to our biological clock. There are a few herbal remedies to escape from this disorder.

6 Herbal Remedies For Sleep Disorders

Chamomile

Chamomile teas as marketed, has excellent relaxing compounds to help with a good night’s sleep. Chamomile is a good pain reliever and soother that supports an effective sleep.

Its nervine property reduces nerve tension and relieves anxiety. Have a cup of Chamomile tea, easily available in chemist stores, before bedtime everyday for sleeping difficulties.

Passionflower

Passionflower can motivate a liberal sleep by relieving muscular pain and inducing calm mind. It is a common herb prescribed by herbalists for insomnia.

It is safe to be used and exists without any adverse side-effects and can even be administered to children. You can use the tea from Passionflower 3 times a day. In a tincture form 30-60 drops can be taken upto 3-4 times in a day.

Hops

It is a good sedative with nerve soothing quality that can restore natural sleep. Hops can be treated for mild to moderate sleep disorders. It is preferred by herbalists as it does not have any withdrawal symptoms. It is mostly used in combination with Chamomile or Valerian. Tea from Hops herb can be taken 2 to 3 times daily.

Valerian

Valerian is also extensively used in various parts of the world to improve sleep quality related to anxiety and restlessness. It is often used with other herbs like California poppy, Hops and Passion Flower.

2-5 drops of Valerian root extract can be taken 2-3 times daily to induce sound sleep. It is better not to use it for more than 3 weeks duration, as human body tends to get used to it. So switch to other herbs for a while and then again get back to Valerian extract.

St. John’s wort

St. John’s wort is a flowery plant. Take a massage with St. John’s wort oil along with its herbal bath before bedtime to benefit the sleep quality. It can relieve even the chronic types of insomnias.

1 to 2 tablets of this herb can be taken not more than 3 times daily. This herb tends to make the skin sensitive towards sun, so proper precautions must be taken from sun’s effect during its administration.

California poppy

In case there is requirement of more strong sedative, California poppy could be one good option. It can tranquil one’s mind. It acts as an analgesic too that also helps you with a good night’s sleep.

It is given to restless babies as a tradition, in some parts of world. 20- 30 drops of this herb’s liquid extract can be taken for a tranquil sleep.
