Share

Gout is a kind of arthritis caused by the body’s inability to process uric acid. Many people have high uric acid level in the blood but all do not have gout. It is only when the uric acid gets deposited in the form of crystals in the joint tissues; it causes inflammation and acute pain.

This disease is mostly inherited but it can also be caused by obesity, high blood pressure, too much alcohol and certain medications. The gout can be triggered and precipitated by fever, injury, abnormal kidney function and heavy eating or heavy consumption of alcohol.

The small joint at the base of the big toe is mostly affected. Other joints that can be compromised are the wrists, fingers knees, ankles and elbows. This disease progresses slowly and the attacks are intermittent.

The attack is characterized by severe and intense pain in the affected joint, redness and tenderness. The main treatment for this disease is to reduce the overload of uric acid in the blood and to reduce the pain and inflammation by shrinking the gouty tophi crystal deposits.
