Herbal remedies are unconventional and popular form of medical treatment that are being used all over the world for a long time. Its natural ability to cure, heal and treat just about any illness is the reason behind its popularity. There are several potent herbs for hair growth too.

Although several people have obtained positive results by using these herbal remedies, it might not work in the same way for all, as the body of every individual is unique.

Herbal Remedies for Hair Growth

Ginkgo Biloba

This popular herb increases the flow of blood to the brain. Hence, it is used widely for hair growth. It provides the necessary nutrient and nourishment to the hair follicles. Nevertheless, in many cases, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) has an effect on the hair follicles and the only way to suppress its effects is with DHT-blockers like propecia and a few other anti-androgens.

Stinging Nettle

This herb is one of the preferred means to control balding. The herb also prevents the hormone testosterone from being changed into DHT. It reduces the hair loss and also stimulates hair growth. This course-toothed plant is more effective, when it is used along with saw palmetto.

Saw Palmetto

This is another effective herbal therapy for hair loss, which slows down the process of balding and also stimulates hair growth. The herb is considered to be a harmless herbal remedy except for its mild gastrointestinal distress. It also inhibits the 5AR enzyme (5-alpha-reductase), which converts testosterone hormone to DHT. According to a study, the extract of this herb repressed the levels of 5AR by almost 32 percent without affecting the levels of testosterone in men.

Panax Ginseng

Before it made its mark on the western shores, this popular herb was used for hundreds of years in the Asian continent. This natural stimulant with circulatory and metabolism benefits stimulate the hair growth by strengthening and nourishing the hair. However, there has been no conclusive evidence to prove that it is successful in stopping hair loss.

Aloe Vera

The gel form of this herb is used widely to stimulate hair growth. The gel is massaged on the scalp every night and then rinsed in the morning. Besides clearing the pores, it balances the scalp’s pH level.

Horsetail

This herb revives the hair by improving the blood flow and circulation. The extract of horsetail has a high concentration of sulfur and silica, which are important for healthy and strong hair growth.

Onion

Onion stimulates hair growth, as it has high levels of sulfur in it. You need to cut an onion and use it to massage the scalp (or bald spot) just before the shower. Repeat this procedure every alternate day. Onion juice is used as a hair tonic to avoid further hair loss.

Holy Basil

The seeds of this herb along with castor oil are used as a remedy for hair loss. It is widely used due to its effectiveness. It protects shedding of hair by strengthening the hair root and avoids premature graying of hair. Besides, it is also used to treat various skin disorders and also as an anti-stress agent.

Red Pepper

Capsicum or red pepper enhances blood circulation, cell division and re-growth of hair. It is mixed with any hair oil and is used to massage the scalp and rinsed. In addition, lime seeds, black pepper and lime juice are combined together to form a paste. This mixture is used on the bald patches daily for a few weeks, which helps in hair growth.

Brahmi

This Indian herb has the ability to strengthen the hair roots and promote healthy re-growth of hair. The Brahmi oil or tonic is massaged over the scalp 2 times a week. Besides protecting from hair loss, it also stops premature graying of hair.

Amaranth (Amaranthus)

Also known as pigweed, it is rich in manganese, magnesium, iron and protein. Amaranthus has more calcium than milk. A paste prepared from its seeds and leaves is applied to the scalp. The paste is rinsed with water, after massaging the scalp for a few minutes.

Margosa (Neem)

The leaves of this tree help in preventing hair loss by strengthening the hair roots. Neem can be used as a decoction or neem juice can be mixed along with oil and then applied to the scalp.

Rosemary and Sage

Besides stimulating hair growth, the herbs strengthen the hair root and clear the scalp. The liquid obtained by boiling rosemary and sage along with peach leaf, burdock and nettle is used to rinse the hair after washing the hair with a mild shampoo. In the end, rinse the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Triphala (An Ayurvedic Herb)

This herb is known for its tissue rejuvenation and blood circulation. This natural healer is used as a shampoo to strengthen the hair roots. Besides the above mentioned herbal remedies, there are a few herbs that must be included in your daily diet to address the nutritional imbalance. Bringraj

This is a popular Ayurvedic herbal remedy. Besides strengthening the hair roots, the herb also rejuvenates hair follicles and prevents hair loss and baldness.

Blueberries

The wild blueberries consist of a chemical known as proanthocyanidins, which has a unique property of promoting hair follicles to shift from the cycle of resting phase to growing phase at a much faster pace. The other berries like raspberries, strawberries, cranberries and also grape seeds and pomegranates also have this property, but at a lesser proportion.

Flax-seed

The presence of alpha linolenic acid (Omega 3 fatty acid) is quite useful to people with the problem of dandruff. Besides, it also gives natural sheen to hair.Apples, oats and cucumber, pumpkin seeds, soybeans, sesame and sunflower seeds, eggs and fish, leafy greens, brown rice, lettuce and spinach are some of the food products that must be incorporated into the diet, as they increase the chances of hair re-growth by supporting the hair shaft and maintaining a strong hair follicle.
