7 Herbal Remedies For Hay Fever

Share

Hay fever, which is also known as allergic rhinitis, is a condition caused by an allergic reaction of the body to a certain substance.

The symptom of hay fever includes runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and nasal congestion. There are various natural remedies which can be used to cure hay fever and these are given below.

7 Tips To Cure Hay Fever Naturally

Butterbur

Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) is a herb, which is widely used in folk medicine for curing migraine, stomach cramps allergies and asthma. The exact way by which Butterbur cures hay fever is still not known but it is believed that it works in a manner, which is similar to allergy medications and it blocks the action of the inflammatory particles which cause allergic reactions.

There have been various studies which have shown that Butterbur is effective in curing hay fever, but it should be consumed carefully as there are various side-effects of Butterbur like indigestion, fatigue, vomiting or constipation.

Quercetin

Quercetin is a type of antioxidant and even though there isn’t adequate research to prove that it helps with allergies, it is thought that it prevents the release of histamine, which is an inflammatory substance associated with allergic reactions like sneezing and itching. Various food products like apples, berries, red grapes and onions contain quercetin in the natural form.

Carotenoids

Carotenoids are a family of plant pigments and the most famous among them are beta-carotene. Even though no study has been conducted to prove that carotenoids help with allergies, a shortage of carotenoids is known to cause inflammation in the airways. Carotenoids can be taken through apricots, carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

This is a type of acid, which is very important and should necessarily be taken through our diet. Researches prove that omega acids reduce the production of inflammatory acids in our body. Important sources of omega 3 acids are fish oil, flaxseeds and walnuts.

Honey

Honey is also beneficial when it comes to allergies but it should not be taken after the allergy starts, but should be taken before any effects can be seen. If you eat raw honey regularly throughout the year, it will help in building up the immunity of the body and therefore the body will not over-react to the pollen grains which are released in the summer.

Raw honey contains pollen, propolis, honeycomb and liver enzymes. One of these enzymes is amylase which helps in digesting starchy carbohydrates.

Nettle

Nettle enhances the defense mechanism of the body and reduces the chemicals which are produced during an allergic response of the body. Therefore, it makes the defense mechanism of a body stronger and even though it does not mean that it will protect the body against allergies, but it reduces the reactions of the body to pollen grains. It also cleanses the blood. The best way to get nettle is through herbal tea.

Onions

Onions contain quercetin and help in strengthening the immune system of a body. Since hay fever is basically the result of over reaction of the immune system, a stronger immune system will be less affected and so consuming onions can help in reducing hay fever effectively. Onions can be taken in many ways and can be easily consumed with food or simply with sliced tomatoes.
