Hyperacidity is caused due to irregular eating habits. It is due to the increase in the stomach acids. Stomach acids are required for digesting the food we consume. The stomach walls protect the stomach muscles from the acids, but when the level of stomach acids increase more than normal levels, it starts damaging the stomach muscles thereby causes burning sensation.

The symptoms are vomiting, nausea, stiffness of stomach, loss of appetite, pain in stomach, discomfort, indigestion and constipation. Irregular eating habits, alcohol, stress, GERD, etc can cause hyperacidity. If this condition is left untreated, it might cause perforation of stomach walls and many other major problems. Peppermint is an immunomodulator and balances both body and mind. It can treat acidity by lowering the stomach acids and improving digestion. It cools down the burning associated with hyperacidity and relieves pain.

It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which supports the esophageal tissues when the reflux occurs. It reduces pain and injury in the digestive tract. Take some mint leaves and add some water. Boil and strain it. Cool the water and drink it when you feel any abdominal discomfort.

Holy Basil

Holy bail restores almost all body conditions as well as calms the mind. It is very useful for stomach related problems and respiratory disorders. It can alleviate heartburn and concomitant problems. It reduces stomach acids, minimizes reflux and other associated problems.

Chamomile reduces hyperacidity by lowering pepsin activities, which is present in the gastrointestinal tract. It gives the GI system protection against stomach acids.  Chamomile tea relives you from irritation and inflammation due to stomach acids and calms the esophagus. You can take up to 4 glasses of chamomile tea per day.

Milk Thistle

The herb is well known for its health benefits and is popularly called the blessed milk thistle. It is very useful in treating hyperacidity and related symptoms. Brew a tea using the whole herb. Seeds, leaves and fruits can be used in the herbal preparations.

Drink this concoction every day to prevent and cure hyperacidity and heartburn. It treats nausea, stomach pain, cramping and acid reflux. It strengthens the liver and revitalizes it. Silymarin present in the herb is responsible for the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which can help in hyperacidity.

Slippery Elm

It is being used in herbal treatments to cure GERD, hyperacidity, ulcers, etc. The extracts of the inner lining of the tree thickens the stomach wall’s lining with a thick layer of mucus thus creating a strong barrier against stomach acids. It is a demulcent and improves the digestive functions.

It has been prescribed traditionally to take slippery elm mixed with water after having meals and before bed as it lubricates the body.
