Incontinence is the loss of bladder control. The bladder muscles contract involuntarily and push out the urine causing it to leak or trickle without you being able to control it. It can be a mild leaking or a thorough uncontrollable wetting. Though it can happen to anyone it is more common in the elderly.
The muscles of the bladder either become very weak or become too active. There are two types of incontinence: stress incontinence and overactive bladder. In stress incontinence, urine escapes when you laugh, cough or sneeze.
Overactive bladder causes frequent and urgent need to urinate even when the bladder contains very little urine. Nerve damage, prostrate problems, emotional stress, irritation of the bladder and certain diseases can cause incontinence. This problem is very embarrassing and causes no small amount of consternation.
