Mumps is a highly contagious viral infection in which the salivary gland of a person swells up. It occurs only once in a lifetime and is quite common amongst children ranging from 5 to 15 years of age. The symptoms of Mumps include swelling in the area below the jaw line, slight fever, pain around neck, and in rare cases; swelling around the gonads. The main cause of is an error in diet. It becomes a challenge for a mumps-infected person to eat or chew. Therefore, it is advised to follow a diet containing foods that can be easily swallowed without having to chew. Another way to fasten the healing process is to resort to herbal remedies.Following are a few herbal remedies that provide relief from pain without having any harmful side effects.
For the inflamed and paining part of the neck, aloe is the best herb you can lay your hands on in the indigenous medicine system. It acts as a balm and soothes the swollen part of the neck, thereby helping it shrink.
Take a leaf from the Aloe Vera plant and peal it from one side. Smear some turmeric powder on it and apply it over the swollen skin like a bandage. Take it off after 20 minutes. You will observe considerable improvement after a few days itself.
Another herb, Ginger has anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties that help in alleviating the pain. Using this as a remedy can be effective in quelling the swelling and irritation to the skin.
In a tiny bowl, put 1 tbsp of pure ghee and add grated ginger to it. Now smear this paste over the swollen area and if you like then you may cover it up with a Banyan leaf acting as a bandage. Remove the paste after half an hour.
Spices such as black pepper are also an effective remedy for mumps. Pepper has antioxidant properties that boosts the immune system and helps heal mumps at an accelerated pace. You may also add powdered black pepper to your daily tea for extra benefits.
For external use, the swollen area can be coated with a black pepper paste and be removed after 15 minutes.
Chebulic Myroblen, also known as Ink fruit, is a miracle herb and is famously known as long-life elixir. It is indigenous to India. It works wonders in curing mumps as it comprises of anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties that help reduce the swelling. It is used as an efficacious laxative.
A thick paste of Chebulic Myroblen is known to be an effective remedy to treat mumps.
Neem leaves combat inflammation and has anti- viral properties that help cure as well as prevent mumps. These greens should be soaked in warm water for 2 hours, ground into a paste and smeared over the swollen gland.
Doctors advise to eat 3-4 neem leaves per day to lead a healthier life.
Fenugreek seeds also known as Methi Daana in Hindi, has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that subdue the viral infection and ascend the intensity of pain. Soak fenugreek seeds in water over night and grind them into a paste in the morning. Apply it plenteously on the swollen side of the face. Wash off with warm water after 20 minutes.
The retained water from the soaked fenugreek seeds can also be consumed.
The analgesic constitution of Banyan leaves helps in tranquilizing the inflammation caused by Mumps. Clean the Banyan leaf thoroughly and heat it over a pan. Smear a spoon of heated clarified butter on it and apply it like a bandage over the mump. Remove the leaf after 30 minutes. Repeat this for a week.
