10 Herbal Remedies For Scabies

Scabies is a skin infection that is highly contagious and can cause itching, rashes, redness and pain. This ailment is rather common in young adults and children and is easily spread among people through indirect and direct contact.

This condition usually affects the genital areas, waist, and arms or appears on unhygienic or unclean areas. There is an array of herbal cures available for scabies that can reduce pain and itching.

Herbal Remedies for Scabies

St.John’s Wort

The fresh extract of this herbal cure is applied directly on the affected area 4 times per day for about 7 days. It provides instant respite by suppressing the itching symptoms.

Margosa (Neem) and Turmeric

This Indian herb is an effective treatment for scabies and is packed with natural antiseptic properties. The margosa oil is applied on the affected part and then massaged until the oil completely seeps into the surface of the skin.

This herbal cure also eliminates bacteria and fungus trapped beneath the skin. The substance curcumin present in the turmeric root combat various skin conditions. Blend fresh neem leaves and turmeric root in the ratio of 4:1 and use this mixture on the affected area.

Tea Tree Oil

This traditional Aboriginal herbal medicine has a variety of ingredients. It contains a substance known as terpinen-4-ol, which helps in soothing the itchy skin. The wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties of the tea tree oil penetrate into the skin layers and heal the ailment. About 10 – 20 drops of this oil can be used on the itchy area or added into warm bath water.

Alder

This deciduous plant is commonly found in Europe and is popular for its herbal properties and strong bark. The leaves and bark of the tree are used to treat various problems pertaining to throat, gum and tooth.

Also, it is an effective remedy for scabies. The bark of this tree is boiled in vinegar and then massaged on the affected part, which will dry up some of the scabs. This treatment must be done for at least 3 days and 1 or 2 times per day to ensure that the parasites are killed.

Goldenseal

This small herbal plant is grown in damp meadows and shady woods and is found in many places in the United States. The rhizome of this herb is used to cure different conditions such as yeast infections and also to prevent infections in the wounds. There are several products available in the market that contains this herb. You need to purchase one that helps in healing your wounds.

Pokeroot

This popular Native American and European plant is known for its various potent benefits. The pokeroot is used to clean the lymphatic system, cure scabies and relieve inflammation of the glands.

The powdered herb can be used for scabies, which helps in preventing infection and soothes inflammation and redness of the skin. However, pokeroot must not be taken orally due to its potential toxicity. Nevertheless, pokeroot is perfectly safe to be used topically.

Aloe Vera

This succulent herb grows in arid regions. It has long been used in medicines due to its powerful properties. The gel of the leaf also heals wounds. Glycoproteins, amino acids, polysaccharides and salicylic acid are some of the active ingredients present in Aloe Vera. Also, the plant is known for its immunostimulant, laxative and skin-healing properties. A study published in ‘Phytotherapy Research” in the October issue of 2009 states that the gel of this plant is as effective as benzyl benzoate, which is an anti-scabies drug. It relieves itching and clears up skin lesions. Use of benzyl benzoate might produce oozing, blisters and difficulty in urinating. However, Aloe Vera offers cure with very few side effects. Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch suggests applying the gel of Aloe Vera topically to cure the scabies rash.

Pennyroyal

This is one of the effective treatment options for scabies. It is available in the tincture form and can be purchased from any health food stores. The tincture is applied directly to the irritated skin, which soothes itching.

Black Walnut

This is an effective remedy for parasitic infections like scabies. Sharol Tilgner, a noted author, herbalist and Naturopathic physician states that the black walnut has vermifuge and anti-fungal properties and hence, it is useful in getting rid of parasites and worms. It is used to cure various ailments like athlete’s foot, Candida fungal infections, ringworm and scabies.

Onion Skin

This is a natural herbal cure for scabies, as it contains quercetin in high amounts. Quercertin has a soothing and healing effect on the skin. You need to boil about 6 onions in one quart of water (30 minutes). Once it is cool, the mixture is applied to the infected area.
