6 Herbal Remedies For Wheezing

Wheezing is a condition when there is a whistle like sound experienced while breathing. This happens when the air passes through the breathing tubes which are narrow. Wheezing symbolizes a problem with breathing. The sound is noticed primarily when you exhale, but sometimes you hear it even while inhaling. Wheezing very often happens from the bronchial tubes located deep inside the chest, but it might be because of a blockage in larger passages or in individuals, who suffer from specific problems associated with the vocal cords.

There are several reasons, which lead to wheezing and coughing. When you don’t suffer from any particular health issue which could cause coughing, then wheezing could indicate a chronic respiratory disorder like bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia or emphysema. Wheezing and coughing indicates that the upper region of the respiratory tract is blocked or infected or irritated. A few herbal remedies that effectively help in getting rid of wheezing are discussed below.

Various Herbal Remedies For Wheezing

Ginger Tea

Ginger is a great herbal remedy for wheezing. Drinking a cup of tea made with ginger before retiring to bed everyday works effectively in the treatment of wheezing.

The spicy and powerful elements found in ginger acts as a medicine for cough, which eliminates the annoying phlegm that creates an itchy sensation in the throat. It also helps in relaxing the air passages and provides a cooling effect in the chest. Ginger can also be consumed as candies, which are also very effectual.

Wild Cherry Bark

This herb is known for its sedative kind of effect. It works as a medicine for cough, as an astringent, and tonic. It works on healing continuous and stubborn cough, pertussis, respiratory mucosa that is irritated and bronchitis. It soothes the sensory-nerves in the lungs and decreases the reflex of cough, which enables increased and improved respiration.

This herb can be administered by making an infusion and had thrice a day. This helps in inhibiting wheezing by pushing the mucous out of the air passages and creating a cooling effect on the throat.

Turmeric

Turmeric is known to be very effective and it is easily available. Turmeric is an astringent, antiseptic, alterative, antibacterial, carminative and stimulant. Turmeric has been popularly used in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines from several centuries. Turmeric possesses bronco-dilating qualities and works as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory agent.

It can be administered by preparing a tea or by boiling it with milk or water or could be added to the food. You can make a drink by mixing milk and turmeric powder. Take ½ teaspoon of turmeric and mix it with ½-glass milk. Warm the milk, if you like warm drinks or you can also drink it cold. Drinking this 2-3 times a day helps in getting relief from wheezing and coughing.

Mullein

Mullein is an herb, which is considered as a tonic to the respiratory system, an antispasmodic, medicine and antibiotic. It is utilized to get rid of wheezing, cough and breathing issues like shortness of breath due to conditions like asthma. Mullein is known to create a cooling and soothing effect on the mucous membrane and alleviates spasms and inflammation inside the bronchial passages.

This herb is known to heal cold, emphysema, flu, asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough. It increases the production of mucous, which helps in forming saliva. Mullein can be prepared as a tea to get relief from wheezing.

Grindelia

Grindelia is an effective herb, which has medicinal properties that help in healing wheezing. It is also an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory agent, which helps in treating conditions like bronchial issues, respiratory difficulties from asthma and phlegm. It has a soothing effect on the lining of the muscles in the bronchial airways.

This helps in clearing congestion caused by mucus. This herb decreases the heart rate and makes the bronchial nerve endings numb. This helps in smooth flow of air during inhalation and exhalation. Grindelia is made into a tincture or infusion using the flowers or dried leaves and boiled in water for ten to fifteen minutes and must be consumed at least thrice a day to see better results.

Hyssop

This herb is considered as a cleansing herb and has antiseptic, antibacterial, antispasmodic and expectorant properties. It is useful to sedate coughing, which is caused due to the wheezing problem. Hyssop is also a great herb for respiratory infections, bronchitis, phlegm, asthma, and pleurisy and lung disorders.

It has a calming effect, which helps to get rid of the phlegm present in the lungs. However, it is suggested to use this herb only for a short duration to prevent toxicity. The flowers and leaves of hyssop are distilled for the essential oils. It combines well with various other herbs like cypress, lemon, geranium, rosemary, ylang ylang, lavender and sandalwood.
