Indigestion is a very common problem faced by everyone be it children or teenagers or adults and the aged. Though not a serious health problem, indigestion and bloating can lead to several distressing symptoms like, abdominal pain, cramps, nausea, gas, heartburn and flatulence.
The main reasons for indigestion and bloating are overeating, too much of animal food, excessive oily and fatty foods, improper nutrition, lack of dietary fibre and processed starches and sugars.
The food that we eat is broken down in the stomach and then passed on to the small intestine where the nutrients from the food are assimilated and the residual waste then shifts to the colon and from the colon it is eliminated out of the body.
Indigestion interferes with all these functions and causes great discomfort. The bacteria in the colon feed on the waste and putrefy it, giving rise to foul smelling gas. Indigestion and bloating should not be taken lightly as they can lead to other serious problems of the gastrointestinal tract.
