11 Home Remedies For Conjunctivitis In Adults

Conjunctivitis occurs when the conjunctiva of the eye is inflamed and becomes pink in colour along with the formation of pus. Whilst the condition is not very serious, conjunctivitis when left without treatment can cause serious damage to the eyes.

Being a contagious disease, conjunctivitis must be controlled immediately so that the infection does not spread to others in the family. Conjunctivitis can easily be treated at home and the severity and spread of the disease controlled without causing much trouble. Here are some wonderful ways to control the disease.

Tips To Cure Conjunctivitis Naturally

Warm Or Cold Compress

Using a warm or a cold compress has almost the same effect on eyes infected with conjunctivitis. A warm compress can be done using a clean and soft cotton cloth. Warm some pure water and soak the cotton cloth in it. Wring it dry and apply on the lids.

This will help in reducing the inflammation in the eyes and also for loosening the dry crust, which is difficult to remove otherwise. In the same manner, using an ice cube after covering with a soft cotton cloth too will help in reducing the inflammation and pain in the eyes. Repeat as frequently as required.

Chamomile

Chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties and can help in reducing the inflammation of the conjunctiva and also in removing the pus from the eyelids by making it moist and easy to be wiped off. Brew a tea with a tablespoon of chamomile in a cup of boiling water.

Steep for about 4-5 minutes and cool it. Strain and allow it to be cooled in the refrigerator for some time. This water can be used for rinsing and cleaning the infected eyes. The cooled tea bag can be used for external application on the eyes.

Tea Bags

Plain tea bags too can be used for application in the eyes infected with conjunctivitis. The tannin in the tea has anti-inflammatory properties and hence a wonderful natural treatment for conjunctivitis. The procedure is same as using chamomile. After cooling the tea bag, apply on the affected eye for relief from swelling and pain. Tea bags will also help in removing the tiredness from the eyes and brighten up your eyes as well.

Baking Soda

Being a mild antibacterial agent, baking soda is gentle on the eyes and can be used as soon as the infection surfaces. Baking soda is also good for removing inflammation associated with conjunctivitis. Take half a teaspoon of baking soda and add a cup of warm water to this.

Rinse your eyes with this solution and use a spray bottle for spraying the solution on the eyes as well after the baking soda has settled underneath. Repeat as often as needed.

Honey

Honey is a humectant and moisturizing agent along with its antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. For treating conjunctivitis, you must use a good quality organic product. Take fresh organic honey and add some warm water to this. Use this for washing the eyes frequently. Honey will keep the bacterial action minimal and prevent the infection from becoming severe. With regular rinses, the infection will soon subside and the eyes will remain well moisturized.

Juice Of Potato

The juice of potato too is known to be a great cure for conjunctivitis. Potato juice has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for reducing the inflammation of the conjunctiva and also treating the infection as well.

Take a potato and clean it thoroughly off the dirt. Peel the skin and grate the potato. Take a clean cotton cloth and keep the grated pieces on it. Tie it and squeeze the juice out through it. This juice can be used for rinsing the eyes frequently.

Coriander Water

Coriander water is very cooling and also helps in relieving the swelling, burning and pain associated with conjunctivitis. Take some coriander seeds and wash the seeds well. This can be tied in a clean cotton cloth. Soak the seeds in a bowl of clean water and leave it overnight. In the morning, this water can be used for rinsing your eyes every few hours. The cooling properties of coriander water will keep the eyes away from the burning and the anti-inflammatory properties of coriander will help in reducing the swelling and pain as well.

Neem

Neem water is medicinal and can kill all the bacteria and reduce the infection and inflammation in the eyes. Take some fresh neem leaves and add to 2-3 cups of water.

Boil the leaves along with the water for 15-20 minutes. After cooling this water, it can be used for cleaning the pus and eyes. Neem water will soon reduce the bacterial action in the eyes and the infection will soon be brought under control.

Gooseberry

This is a wonderful remedy that can be taken internally for treating conjunctivitis. Gooseberry is a great immune booster and antibacterial agent. Along with the antibacterial properties of honey, it helps in curing the irritation and inflammation caused by conjunctivitis. Take adequate amounts of gooseberries to squeeze one cup of juice from it. Take one cup of this juice along with a tablespoon of organic honey twice a day. Within a few hours, the infection will subside and soon you will be completely relieved.

Spinach And Carrot Juices

Vegetable juices are replete with nutrients and hence very essential for the overall health of your body. Juices of carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is a potion for the eyes. Spinach is an antioxidant rich vegetable, and also has high amounts of vitamin A.

Therefore, combining the juices of spinach and carrots can help in removing the symptoms of conjunctivitis within a few days. Take 300 ml of carrot juice and 200 ml of spinach juice. Mix together and take it thrice a day. This will help in removing the inflammation as well as infection easily.

Turmeric

Turmeric paste too has many antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties. Take fresh turmeric powder and drink it along with a glass of warm milk or water every day. For external application, add turmeric powder to water and use this for washing the eyes.
