5 Home Remedies For Conjunctivitis

Share

Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection which affects children as well as adults. It is also known as pink eye and it occurs due to the inflammation of the tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid. This tissue is called the conjunctiva and it keeps the eyelid and eyeball moist. When the conjunctiva gets inflamed and irritated due to virus, bacteria, air pollution, harmful chemicals and allergies it causes a burning sensation in the eyes.

The inner lid and the white of the eye become red and thick yellow discharge forms a heavy crust on the eyelashes, especially after sleep. There is a continuous itching and hurting in the eye and it becomes very sensitive to light. Sometimes the vision also gets blurred.

Though conjunctivitis is not a serious health problem, it is very contagious and spreads easily from person to person. It takes about a week for the eye to heal. However, home remedies can reduce the severity of the symptoms and accelerate healing.

Tips To Cure Conjuctivitis Naturally

Rose Water

Rose water soothes the eyes and relaxes the irritated tissue. It has a soft cooling effect which alleviates the burning sensation in the eyes. It starts the healing process by reducing the swelling and minimizing the pain. Put a few drops of pure rose water into the eyes twice a day. Your eyes will feel soothed and will stop hurting so much.

Amla Juice

Amla juice is known to be the best remedy for conjunctivitis. It reduces the swelling and provides relief in the itching. Its antibacterial properties fight the infection and its astringent properties relieve the pain and soothe the eyes. Grate a few fresh amlas. Blend the grated amla in a mixer with a little water. Squeeze and strain the pulp to extract the juice. Drink half a cup of this juice everyday.

Coriander Seeds

Boil two teaspoons of coriander seeds in one glass of water. Boil for five minutes. Strain the water and let it cool. Wash your eyes with this decoction three times a day. This is an excellent cooling and soothing eyewash. It reduces the swelling and pain and the burning sensation simply vanishes.

Chamomile Flowers

Steep a few chamomile flowers in one glass of boiling water for twenty minutes. Strain the infusion and use it to wash your eyes. Chamomile flowers have anti-inflammatory properties which reduce painful swellings. They also possess soothing and healing powers which alleviate pain and itching. Wash your eyes at least three times a day for optimum benefit.

Potato Slices

Raw potato has excellent healing properties which are very beneficial in conjunctivitis. Peel a raw potato and cut it into thin slices. Place the slices on the eyelids and leave them there for fifteen minutes. The cool moisture of the slices will reduce the swelling and itching and provide great comfort. Repeat this procedure several times a day.

You should keep your eyes away from direct sunlight or bright light it as it irritates and aggravates the problem. Wear sunglasses constantly to protect your eyes and to prevent infection from spreading to other people.
