Home Remedies For Dry Eyes

The problem of dry eyes is also known as “Keratitis Sicca”. Dry eyes may result in pain, itching, redness, blurring of vision and so on. The main cause of dry eyes is lack of tears. Other causes of dry eyes include age, sun exposure, eye injury, dry environment and so on.

Active or passive smoking may also contribute to the problem of dry eyes. Staring at a computer screen or watching television for long hours can also result in dry eyes. Various symptoms of dry eyes can be cured with home remedies.

Home Remedies for Dry Eyes

Warm Compress

A warm compress can be created by soaking towel/cloth in warm water. You can place warm compress on the eyelids for 10 – 15 minutes to reduce dryness in the eyes.

Oil

You can apply almond, castor, flaxseed or fish oil around the eyes to deal with the problem of dry eyes. To obtain effective results, you can use any of the above mentioned oils 2 – 3 times in a day.

Fennel Seeds

A mixture can be prepared by adding dried fennel seeds (1 teaspoon) in boiling water (1 cup). Cotton balls can be soaked in this mixture and kept on the closed eyelids for a period of 10 – 15 minutes to cure the problem of dry eyes.

Lavender Oil

You can prepare a mixture by adding lavender oil (2 – 3 drops) in water and place squeezed cotton balls soaked in this mixture on your closed eyelids to treat the symptoms of dry eyes. To get effective results, this remedy is required to be used on a frequent basis.

Tamarind Seeds

The problem of dry eyes can also be treated with the use of tamarind seeds. You can use the extract prepared by soaking tamarind seeds in warm water as an eye drop to obtain relief from dry eyes.

Lemon Juice

A paste can be prepared with the use of lemon juice, orange lentil flour, tomato puree and turmeric powder. You can apply this paste under your eyes on a daily basis to cure the problem of dry eyes.

Tea

You can prepare a tea and soak 2 cotton balls in it. Placing the fully saturated cotton balls on closed eyelids for a period of 5 – 10 minutes can help in the treatment of dry eyes.

Tea bags can also be used for obtaining relief from the problem of dry eyes. Direct application of a tea prepared by boiling bilberry leaves (1 teaspoon) in water (1 cup) with a cotton ball can help in treating various symptoms of dry eyes.

Cucumber

Cucumber is a highly effective home remedy for dry eyes. A slice of fresh cucumber can be placed on each eyelid for a period of 20 – 25 minutes to treat the problem of dry eyes. It is important to use this remedy 3 – 4 times in a day for best results.

Cold Water

One of the simplest home remedies is to wash the eyes with cold water on a regular basis to deal with the problem of dry eyes. Cotton swabs soaked in cold water can also be placed on the closed eyelids to obtain effective results.
