Dyspepsia or indigestion is a very common ailment. Nearly everyone suffers from it at some point or another. This is a functional disease which means that the organs of the digestive tract and the nerves controlling the organs are not functioning properly.

The digestive tract organs are the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, gallbladder and the colon. The nerves that control the organs lie within the muscles of the organs and also include the nerves of the spinal cord and brain. This disease is mostly caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease and gastritis.

It can also be the first symptom of peptic ulcers. It is mainly characterized by pain in the abdomen which keeps recurring, a heavy feeling in the abdomen, bloating, burping, heartburn and nausea. The main treatment for dyspepsia is to reduce the stomach acid and to decrease the spasms in the digestive tract. Stress, poor nutrition and unhealthy food can greatly contribute to dyspepsia.

Baking Soda

This common household ingredient has many medicinal values which heal and cure innumerable diseases and ailments. Take a glass of water and add half a teaspoon of baking soda to it.

Drink the solution immediately before the fizz dies away. Baking soda will neutralize the acid in the stomach and provide tremendous relief in the heartburn and pain. Drink this mixture twice daily.

Ginger

Ginger has multitudinous healing and curative powers. It is impossible to enumerate the number of diseases and ailments it cures and heals. It has powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and pain relieving properties. It aids digestion and ensures the proper functioning of all the digestive tract organs. Peel and pare half a kilo of ginger. Take a glass jar and fill it with the sliced ginger. Squeeze the juice of five to six lemons and add two heaped teaspoons of salt. Add a handful of raisins and shake the mixture well. Eat one teaspoon of this mixture after every meal.

Mint

Grind a few fresh mint leaves to a fine paste. Mix the paste into a glass of fresh buttermilk and add a pinch of kala namak. Stir well and drink this mixture after every meal.

Mint promotes digestion and reduces heartburn. It cools the stomach and soothes the inflammation. Buttermilk reduces the stomach acidity and strengthens the functions of all the digestive organs. Kala namak reduces flatulence and abdominal pain.

Asafoetida or Hing
