10 Home Remedies For Nits

Share

Nits are small eggs laid by head lice and can be a deep-rooted problem if left untreated. Nits need the warmth from your scalp and hence the lice always lay eggs closer to the scalp, near the hair shaft. Removing the nit glue can be a challenging task and in order to prevent the lice from multiplying, it is essential that the nits are thoroughly removed from the hair. Here are some great ways to remove nits from your hair.

Tips To Treat Nits Naturally

Nit comb

Using a nit comb is the simplest way of removing nits from your hair. Nit combs are specially designed with teeth that are closely packed so that while you comb, the comb brushes against the hair strand, causing friction and making the nits fall out.

Wooden combs function better than metal ones as wood sticks better to hair than metal. When you use a nit comb, it helps if your hair is wet. But those who have thick hair need not wash their hair before combing with a nit comb. Part your hair towards either sides and clip it into smaller sections so that you can cover each section adequately. Comb from top to bottom several times and ensure that you use a well-lit area of the room to check on the nits.

Vinegar

While using a nit comb, it helps if you use a natural method for loosening the nit glue so that the nits slide down the comb easily. White vinegar is an excellent remedy for loosening the nit glue before you actually comb them down for removal.

Take adequate amounts of white vinegar in a mug and cover your entire hair with vinegar. Cover your hair with a shower cap and allow the vinegar to take effect. After an hour, you can use the nit comb for removing the nits, which have been loosened by the vinegar. You might need a week or two for removing all the nits from your hair.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a better remedy for loosening the nits. This because it has healing and soothing properties as well which helps in keeping the scalp from getting irritated during the procedure. Generous amounts of apple cider vinegar can be applied on the scalp and hair and left for an hour before you comb using a nit comb. Apple cider vinegar also makes your hair shine after the procedure.

Lime

Lime has astringent properties and also removes the dead skin cells and dandruff along with the loosening of the nits from your hair. Tale adequate quantities of lime juice and cover your scalp and hair with it, taking special care to cover generous amounts on the hair shafts and near the scalp where most of the nits are lodged.

Again, leave for an hour before using the nit comb. Continue every day until all the nits are removed from your hair. This might take 2-3 weeks of diligent applications and combing.

Olive Oil

Olive oil too helps in loosening the nit glue and also in nourishing the scalp and hair as well. Therefore, it is a better remedy than others. Take some olive oil and warm it slightly. Apply on the scalp and head and massage vigorously for 15 minutes. Leave it on for an hour and cover your head with a shower cap. Once the nit glue has loosened, you can use a nit comb for removing the nits. This treatment too takes time for all the nits to be removed completely from the head.

Petroleum Jelly

Use of petroleum jelly is another way to make the nits loose before you comb your hair with a nit comb. Petroleum jelly is a little thick in consistency and could be difficult to apply on the hair and the scalp.

Take generous amounts and smear on the strands of hair as well as the scalp. Wait for an hour before using the nit comb. Once you have finished combing, wash off with a shampoo and repeat every day until all the nits have come loose.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a strong essential oil that helps in loosening the nits and also killing the lice if any. Being antiviral in nature, it also treats the scalp and prevents infections and fungus. Take some tea tree oil and dilute it with a little olive oil. Massage firmly on to the scalp and leave it on for half an hour. Being very acidic in nature, tea tree oil will loosen the nit glue and also keeps your scalp healthy and free from infections.

Lavender Oil

Lavender essential oil can be used along with tea tree oil or separately for loosening the nits and removing them from the hair. Add five drops of lavender oil to your regular shampoo and mix well. This can be used for lathering your scalp and hair.

Use a shower cap to cover the head and leave it on for an hour. Wash off after this and apply white vinegar. Leave for ten minutes and wash off. Now you can use a nit comb for removing the loosened nits.

Rosemary Oil and Eucalyptus Oil

All essential oils work in almost the same manner and whichever combination you use, they all have the same effect on the nits and help in removing the nits effectively. A combination of rosemary and lavender oil too can help in removing the nits without much of an effort. Take 5 drops each of rosemary oil and eucalyptus oil and mix with adequate amounts of olive oil. Massage onto the head and hair and leave it for an hour. Use a nit comb for removal of nits after that.

Peppermint Oil And Olive Oil

Take five drops of peppermint oil and add it to adequate amounts of olive oil. This can be used for massaging on the hair and scalp. Leave it for an hour and wash off after that. Apply white vinegar or apple cider vinegar after this and use a nit comb after ten to fifteen minutes. This will successfully remove all the nits in 3-4 applications.
